Pirates! Royal Sloop vs. Brig of War and Large Merchantman

Me fighting 2 ships at once in Swashbuckler mode. Make sure to weaken the escort ship. My Royal Sloop is fully upgraded: Copper plating - tighter turning Cotton sails - more speed Triple hammocks - 50% more crew Iron scantlings - resist more damage Chain shot - sail damage shot Grape shot - crew damage shot Fine grain powder - fire farther Bronze cannons - cluster fire I basically force them to surrender by smashing their sails with chain shot. But you must first of all hit the main ship several times to prevent it from running away (you won't be able to catch it in swashbuckler mode). Now the escort ship will try to either shoot at you or bord your ship - avoid both at all costs. If either of them tries to bord you, you must quickly use chain shot to gain the speed advantage. I suggest smashing the escort ship's sails while you are at it so that it's easier to catch it afterwards (otherwise it will be magically repaired - especially with more ally ships nearby).

The Black Pirate 1/13 (1926)

A certain pirate of the Spanish Main makes a practice of blowing up with all hands the ships he has looted. By a fluke, one man and his dying father survive such a disaster. Swearing vengeance, the son joins the pirates; soon, "the black pirate" swashbuckles his way into their black hearts, capturing a merchantman singlehanded. Can he now save the life of lovely Isobel? Can he, opposed by a treacherous rival, rise to lead the pirates and thereby deliver them to justice? "Broadway Melody"

Broadway Melody, is the theme tune of the 1929 picture of the same title. Here we are playing the original '29 arrangement. Keep an ear and an eye out for the 1918 Leedy vibraphone. Ironically this is the very instrument used in the SS Rawalpindi Orchestra. The Rawalpindi..now lies at the bottom of the north Atlantic, she was converted to an armed merchantman and sunk by the German battleship Deutschland in 1939.. Michael Veitch introduces us.

Dive on the Wreck of the Persier on 2 Sep 07

The Persier was a 5000 ton British built merchantman. She was built in Newcastle in 1919 and was sold to Belgium shortly after. She traded all over the world, and even took part at Dunkirk in 1940. She nearly sank while doing convoy duty from America to Britain in 1941. She remainded stranded off Iceland for over a year until she was towed back to Britain to be repaired. In 1945 she set off from Cardiff on convoy duty. Off Eddystone she met her nemesis from a couple of torpedoes from UB-1017. Confusion reigned as lifeboats were launched only to be shattered by her propellor. People were spilt out over the heavy Force 7 seas. Support vessels managed to rescue the crew and passengers. The Persier carried on alone drifting into the night. She sank but no one knew where. In 1969, a fisherman found the wreck in Bigbury Bay. Divers from Plymouth Sound went down and brought up the ship's bell. They bought the wreck for 300 pounds and still own her. The Persier is at 50:17:06; 03:58:07 (DMS) at a maximum depth of around 30m. Diving can be done at much any time - there is little tidal flow around her. She lies on a sandy-rocky bottom with extensive and interesting reefs around her. Her bows and stern are fairly recognisable, but the midships is a mess of plates and wreckage (in the 70's the Persier was an upright wreck not unlike the Maine today). She lies roughly in a NE-SW orientation with her bows pointing southwards. The bow is quite upright and stands some 10m above the sea bed. Three large boilers can be seen. The remains of the engine with large pistons scattered over the wrecked plates are easily found. There is an excellent swim through part of the prop shaft chamber which leads straight to the rudder which lies over a reef. Underneath the stern there is a pretty fish filled chamber and just outside lie the remains of the steering gear plus an odd shaped upright metal pyramid that was a gun mount.

Two Butterflies went out at Noon

poem by Emily Dickinson (circa 1862) Two Butterflies went out at Noon - And waltzed upon a Farm - Then stepped straight through the Firmament And rested, on a Beam - And then - together bore away Upon a shining Sea - Though never yet, in any Port - Their coming, mentioned - be - If spoken by the distant Bird - If met in Ether Sea By Frigate, or by Merchantman - No notice - was - to me -

HMAS SYDNEY North Red Sea Boarding Ops 1991

HMAS SYDNEY in the North Red Sea conducting boarding operations on merchant ships bound for Aqaba/Jordan as part of the UN sanctions against Iraq following the war in Kuwait. October 1991 through to January 1992 SYDNEY conducted 219 boardings verifying the cargo against the manifest and checking there was a valid recipient for each item. A random selection of cargo was physically checked with boardings taking up to 4 hours. An average of three boardings were conducted a day. The video shows the boarding party being inserted via fast rope from the seahawk helicopter with the squirrel helicopter acting as top cover and from where this video is shot. The narrative is the pilot and co-pilot of the squirrel with vhf ch16 in the background. The boarding party is inserted in two drops onto the bridgewing. Fast roping simply involves sliding down the rope in a free fall, using the hands to strangle the rope in the last 10 feet. The feet should not be used to slow the descent since it destroys the rope. I was the last man in the first insertion and got hooked up on the seahawk helicopter's deck with a safety flare in my webbing. The loadmaster pushed as I let go of the rope with one hand, hence the delay (at 45s) and slid down the rope a bit shaken. Insertion using the Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) was also used but fast roping was preferred as it wasn't dependent on the merchantman lowering a ladder or a favourable sea state.

ruddigore 10 From the Briny Sea

CHORUS. From the briny sea Comes young Richard, all victorious! Valorous is he ñ His achievements all are glorious! Let the welkin ring With the news we bring Sing it ñ shout it ñ Tell about it ñ Safe and sound returneth he, All victorious from the sea! (Enter RICHARD. The girls welcome him as he greets old acquaintances.) BALLAD ñ RICHARD. I shipped, d'ye see, in a Revenue sloop, And, off Cape Finistere, A merchantman we see, A Frenchman, going free, So we made for the bold Mounseer, D'ye see? We made for the bold Mounseer. But she proved to be a Frigate ñ and she up with her ports, And fires with a thirty-two! It come uncommon near, But we answered with a cheer, Which paralysed the Parley-voo, D'ye see? Which paralysed the Parley-voo! CHORUS. Which paralysed the Parley-voo, etc. Then our Captain he up and he says, says he, "That chap we need not fear, ñ We can take her, if we like, She is sartin for to strike, For she's only a darned Mounseer, D'ye see? She's only a darned Mounseer!" "But to fight a French fal-lal ñ it's like hittin' of a gal ñ It's a lubberly thing for to do; For we, with all our faults, Why, we're sturdy British salts, While she's only a Parley-voo, D'ye see? While she's only a poor Parley-voo!" CHORUS. While she's only a Parley-voo, etc. So we up with our helm, and we scuds before the breeze, As we gives a compassionating cheer; Froggee answers with a shout As he sees us go about, Which was grateful of the poor Mounseer, D'ye see?
