Its been a year since Thee Goth's last expression and in that year things have seemed to go from bad to worse. He has been in and out of Rehab as well as a stint in a Psych ward.... His goal of having a girlfriend by his 40ths birthday was a pipe dream and he is not the same by any means. Ironically it was when he started on some detoxifying tea that things reached the boiling point. All the poisons in his system all came out at once... In a bitter meconium.

Jenson Elijah, son of Chad and Darla Day was publicly dedicated to the Lord on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Hillvue Heights Church. This is the thank-you video Kristin made for Cook Childrens Hospital for helping to save Baby Fen's Life back in November 2006. Baby Fen aspirated meconium and blood during birth and also contracted eColi and strep-pneumo bacteria, which poisoned his blood, tissues, and organs and also caused many additional complications with his heart, lungs, and blood pressure (including pneumonia and pulonary hypertension and pulmonary hypotension). Doctors said he wouldn't make it, but Fen showed them how strong he really was! This movie is really intended for Cooks medical staff, friends, and family to view, but maybe it can give hope to those parents whose baby's doctors have told them that they won't make it through the night. BELIEVE... because you never know... Here's to miracles...

This is the video taken (back in November) a few hours after he was finally taken off the ventilator. He is awake and conscious here for the first time since he was born. They're not ready to move him from the ECMO bed yet just in case. He is still very sick here from the eColi and strep-pneumo bacteria in his blood, but the blood and meconium are finally clearing out of his lungs. He also has pneumonia and pulmonary hypotension when we videoed this. He's lost that extra pound of fluid and is back down to his original birth weight. He has to have a spinal tap right after this to test for meningitis. His doctor says it is very likely that he has it because of the 2 types of bacteria in his blood... well, we know the outcome of that! He seems so happy to hear our voices and immediately calms down when he hears us. As soon as we turned the camera off he smiled... we didn't get that on video, but we did get a still shot of it! :-)

After planning for a drug-free labor and birth, we were very disappointed when I received multiple interventions, even though with a certified nurse midwife. My daughter only weighed 8lbs 1.4oz, which is not terribly large for my frame. After such a treacherous experience, we have decided to never again go to the hospital to have a baby.

This video shows when baby Fen came off of the oscillator and was put on the regular ventilator. Yea! He's still in his ECMO bed in case they needed to go ahead with the surgery, but we knew he was going to be fine. He has edema here and is holding about an extra pound of fluid.

We are the luckiest people in the world: we have not only found true love together but now have also been blessed with our precious son, our true Miracle Baby conceived by IVF. A little bit about us, our video and birth story: The lady in the lab coat holding our son is the doctor who did our IVF cycle. Gunner was born against all odds because we both had fertility problems and I didn't respond well to fertility drugs. He was also born 2 full weeks overdue and had the cord very tight around his neck. My doctor had suspected this was why he didn't want to come out and she was right. Labor was only 6 1/2 hours but there was thick meconium and he was in some distress. We are very very fortunate to have had a competent, experienced doctor attend the birth and deliver him safely. They had to deep suction him and put him in the NICU for a few hours for observation, but thank God he was perfectly fine. He is our greatest joy and blessing.

Until Mom's milk comes in, baby gets all she needs from the tiny amounts of colostrum she nurses. This 'liquid gold' provides nutrition, antibodies and helps clear the digestive tract of meconium. Even though baby is not drinking large amounts, she is not starving. When Mom's milk comes in on day 3 or 4, baby will start to drink larger amounts and will develop more of an appetite. While breastfeeding, mom gets uterine cramps (afterpains) brought on by the release of oxytocin that results from breastfeeding. This helps the uterus contract back to its normal size after birth.

I made this video for Josh and Kristy Schwade (for Father's Day) whose 6 month old son Kaleb has been in ICU since May 2007 due to Shaken Baby Syndrome at the hands of a babysitter. Its purpose is to help all of us focus on Kaleb's health and well-being rather than the horrible crime that was committed. Pray and visualize Baby Kaleb healthy at home with his mommy and daddy and growing up with a happy, healthy, normal life... the gift Josh would really want for his first Father's Day. I believe that Kaleb can have a full recovery from his condition just like my son had a full recovery from his life-threatening illness in November 2006. MIRACLES DO HAPPEN... we just need to BELIEVE!!!
