A Tribute to Queen Lili'uokalani of Hawai'i
A video I made in honor the Hawai'i's Last Queen. Queen Lili'uokalani (1838 to 1917) was a prolific composer, the first female Native Hawaiian author, and the founded the Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Trust for orphans and indigent children--which still exists today. She is best remembered for her composition, "Aloha 'Oe". In 1891, upon the death of her brother King Kalakaua, she became queen of Hawai'i. In 1893, she was deposed by US naval forces and two years later imprisoned in her palace. Until her death in 1917, she continued to fight for the rights of her people and her country, in her words, "....The cause of Hawaiian independence is larger than any one man connected to it". The song in the background is Kanaka Waiwai, a church hymn that the Queen had especially liked. |

Queen Lili`uokalani - Aloha `Oe (Acapella)
I LOVE Hawaii. Just for the record. If my source is correct *cough*GOOGLE*cough*, Queen Lili`uokalani is the song's original artist. Most of you may (or may not?) recognize it from Disney's Lilo & Stitch. Translation: Farewell to thee, Farewell to thee, Sweet fragrance dwelling in the dark forest, One fond embrace, Before I now leave, Until we meet again.. |

Liliuokalani Botanical Gardens
In the middle of a noisy ugly town, there is beauty. You just need to find it. Portions of this 7½ acre garden were once the property and favorite picnic grounds of Queen Liliuokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. She later bequeathed her land to the City and County of Honolulu to be used for the public's enjoyment. This developing garden is devoted to native Hawaiian plants. Music used with permission from the artist: http://www.youtube.com/user/adriancarrpiano Adrian Carr, "Rainbow." (We call rainbows "anuenue" -- ah-new-ay-new-ay) cmon already! |
