Bonobo Baby First View Mother Infant
Video shows the first view of a new Bonobo baby, 1 week old. The bonobo is a rare, very endangered species. Very few videos exist of a new infant and maybe none of just-born infant and mother. The mother is very protective -- holding the baby close at all times. She constantly grooms it. The infant can hold on as the mother moves around. The mother is Unga, the new one is Gina, and Unga's son is Gander. In the same enclosure are Lucy, son Ricky, and daughter Jo-T. In the other enclosure are the matriarch, Susie, her son Donnie, and daughter Lola. On 9/11 Unga was on an airplane over the Atlantic Ocean traveling from Europe. During the crashes the plane was diverted to Gander, Canada. Because of this, Unga's first born was named Gander. Also shows bonobos greeting people they know. They nod their head and give much the same greetings as people do. Donnie knocked on glass to say Hi. Bonobos constantly use tools, either for tasks or fun. Here they are pushing their bedding around. They will push anything and often play ball. The bedding is a "stadium seat" that they carry around and then sit on, or cover themselves with. The bonobo may be the most closely related of all species to the human. We share about 98 % of our genetic make-up. We are more closely related to them and chimpanzees than chimpanzees are to gorillas. Behaviorally the bonobo may be more like people than the chimp. However they are among the most recently discovered of species, thus, few people know about them. Bonobos are notable because they have very complex behavior and can resolve their conflicts by a variety of means that result in an overall peaceful society. They look like people with neatly parted hair and red lips. **The Bonobo, also called the Pygmy or Gracile Chimpanzee (Pan paniscus) belongs to the species (with the common chimpanzee) that is most closely related to humans. Its DNA is 98% identical to that of humans and some researchers think they should be classified with the human species, i.e., Homo paniscus. Bonobos have relatively long legs, a matriarchal cultural, and are generally considered frugivorous. They often walk upright and have a human-like appearance. Frans de Waal, one of the leading primate researchers, has stated that the bonobo is capable of empathy, kindness, altruism, and compassion. E. Savage-Rumbaugh and Roger Lewin have extensively studied the ability of the bonobo to learn language. Kanzi has learned over 3000 spoken English words and around 400 lexigrams. He can understand simple grammatical sentences and possibly invent new vocal sounds. The bonobo is also an accomplished tool user. Many consider the bonobo to be the most closely related of all animals to people. The bonobo has been presented as a stand-in for what human ancestors of only a few million years looked like. The bonobo is remarkably intelligent. |

Bonobo closest species to human walk upright "wear clothes"
Bonobos may be the most closely related of all species to the human. We share about 98 % of our genetic make-up. We are more closely related to them and chimpanzees than chimpanzees are to gorillas. Behaviorally the bonobo may be more like people than the chimp. However they are among the most recently discovered of species, thus, few people know about them. The effects of captivity and of being around people may influence their behavior. Here a young bonobo appears to imitate the human wearing of cloths. However, she may just be carrying around bedding material. Bonobos are quite clothes conscious, however, and around Halloween and at other times, when costumed humans sometimes appear, they cause much excitement and staring among the bonobos. Bonobos are notable because they have very complex behavior and can resolve their conflicts by a variety of means that result in an overall peaceful society. They look like people with neatly parted hair and red lips. Four Hands, The Bonobo
Bonobos use their hands much as people do, but they have 4 of them. The Bonobo, also called the Pygmy or Gracile Chimpanzee (Pan paniscus) belongs to the species (with the common chimpanzee) that is most closely related to humans. E. He can understand simple grammatical sentences and possibly invent new vocal sounds. The bonobo is also an accomplished tool user. Many consider the bonobo to be the most closely related of all animals to people. The bonobo has been presented as a stand-in for what human ancestors of only a few million years looked like. With its pink lips, expressive face, high forehead, long, and neatly-parted, head hair, this animal looks very human. Its human appearance is even more accented by its highly individual facial features and its ability to walk upright with its back straight like a person and unlike the bent over posture of other apes. It is considered the most intelligent of all animals by many researchers. Individuals have been taught a vocabulary of as many as 400 words and are able to type using a special keyboard of geometric symbols. Bonobos can understand and respond to such complex commands as ones to take a bottle out of a refrigerator, open it, and put it on a table. Bonobo DNA is around 99-98 percent identical to our own. Despite this closeness, the bonobo is one of the least recognized of any animal. This is because it was discovered in one of the most forbidden wildernesses of Africa in only 1928. Amazingly enough, this closest cousin was one of the very last large mammals to be discovered. The bonobo is remarkably intelligent. Bonobos normally are calmer than these; however, the video shows that they were able to get along peaceably. The Chimpanzee -Chimp or Common Chimpanzee- (Pan troglodytes) is the species considered the most closely related to humans. They can weigh up to 155 lbs and stand up to 4 feet tall. Like people, they have long lives. For example Cheeta, the star of the movie, Tarzan, is 75 years old. They are native to Africa and four subspecies exist. They are highly intelligent, make elaborate use of tools, and can use language. A chimpanzee named Washoe learned up to 800 signs in American Sign Language. Researchers into chimpanzee language include Sally Boysen, Ohio State University, (who has taught chimpanzees to communicate using a computer), Noam Chomsky, and David Premack. Although chimpanzees are shorter than most people, they are much stronger. The average Chimpanzee has over 5 times the upper-body strength of a human male. A chimp, even a young one, can easily overpower a grown man. The gorilla (gorilla gorilla) is the largest of all living primates. These African apes are divided into two species and 4 or 5 subspecies. Their DNA is 97-98% identical to that of humans and they are considered the next closest relative after the chimpanzee. Gorillas can be over 6 feet tall and weight over 500 lbs. They are highly intelligent. Some such as Koko have been taught a subset of sign language. They use tools for a number of purposes. Colo in the Columbus zoo is over 50-years old and the first gorilla born in captivity. |

Chimpanzee & Gorilla Maternal Behavior
Video tells about maternal behavior in chimpanzees and in gorillas. The video was filmed at Dr. Sally T. Boysen's Ohio State University Chimpanzee Center. She thought of the chimpanzees as her children. Bonobo Display-Male bonobo, the peaceful ape displays
Bonobo male - This male bonobo shows the display behavior sometimes used by bonobos and chimps. This is not a random shaking. He is shown very carefully selecting the material used to make an impressive display. He selects dead, hollow stems. When he shakes these dead weeds, they make a certain sound. The weeds also are of a particular size. His shaking itself draws attention. In addition, he further draws attention with his charging behavior. This makes children watching nervous. The bonobo is the peaceful ape. The species has a matriarchal structure. This can be seen in the way the male treats the young. In spite of his display, he allows the young bonobo to play near him. The Bonobo, also called the Pygmy or Gracile Chimpanzee (Pan paniscus) belongs to the species (with the common chimpanzee) that is most closely related to humans. Its DNA is 98% identical to that of humans and some researchers think they should be classified with the human species, i.e., Homo paniscus. Chimp, Bonobo, Gorilla, Orangutan, Siaman-The Great Ape
The video shows a comparison of the 4 great apes and the gibbon. The Chimpanzee, Bonobo, Orangutan, and Gorilla are considered the great apes and the Siamang and Gibbon are among the lesser apes. The gorilla is shown probing for food, a common behavior of the gorilla. ***The Chimpanzee -Chimp or Common Chimpanzee- (Pan troglodytes) is the species, with the bonobo, considered the most closely related to humans. ***The Bonobo, also called the Pygmy or Gracile Chimpanzee (Pan paniscus) belongs to the species (with the common chimpanzee) that is most closely related to humans. ***The gorilla (gorilla gorilla) is the largest of all living primates. ***The Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) consists of two species of great apes native to Indonesia and Malaysia. They have orange/reddish hair and long arms. They are the most arboreal of the great apes and each night they fashion nests in which they sleep. They can grow to almost 6 feet tall and weigh over 260 lbs. Like other apes, they are remarkably intelligent. They use tools regularly. According to researcher, James Lee, orangutans are the world's most intelligent animals other than humans. They have great learning and problem solving ability. Some think they have greater problem solving abilities than chimpanzees. They demonstrate language capability, can play computer games, and have a complex culture. ***The gibbon, a lesser ape, lives in the forests of southern Asia. They mainly live in trees and are Black, beige, and sometimes Black with white facial hair. They sing loudly in the morning in a chorus of very loud whoops and shrieks. They are called the lesser apes because they differ from the chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans. In the early morning and late afternoon pairs of gibbons sing duets. The female sings the major part of th song knows as a "great call." It begins with melodious whooping and climaxes in a high pitched babbling. The male gives simple hoots.
