The role of leadership in software development
Google Tech Talks May 6, 2008 ABSTRACT When you look around, there are a lot of leaders recommended for software development. We have the functional manager and the project manager, the scrum master and the black belt, the product owner and the customer-on-site, the technical leader and the architect, the product manager and the chief engineer. Clearly that's too many leaders. So how many leaders should there be, what should they do, what shouldn't they do, and what skills do they need? This will be a presentation and discussion of leadership roles in software development -- what works, what doesn't and why. Speaker: Mary Poppendieck Mary Poppendieck started her career as a process control programmer, moved on to manage the IT department of a manufacturing plant, and then ended up in product development, where she was both a product champion and department manager. Mary considered retirement 1998, but instead found herself managing a government software project where she first encountered the word "waterfall." When Mary compared her experience in successful software and product development to the prevailing opinions about how to manage software projects, she decided the time had come for a new paradigm. She wrote the award-winning book Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit in 2003 to explain how the lean principles from manufacturing offer a better approach to software development. Over the past six years, Mary has found retirement elusive as she lectures and teaches classes with her husband Tom. Based on their on-going learning, they wrote a second book, Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash in 2006. A popular writer and speaker, Mary continues to bring fresh perspectives to the world of software development. Speaker: Tom Poppendieck Tom Poppendieck has 25 years of experience in computing including eight years of work with object technology. His modeling and mentoring skills are rooted in his experience as a physics professor. His early work was in IT infrastructure, product development, and manufacturing support, and evolved to consulting project assignments in healthcare, logistics, mortgage banking, and travel services. Tom led the development of a world-class product data management practice for a major commercial avionics manufacturer that reduced design to production transition efforts from 6 months to 6 weeks. He also led the technical architecture team for very large national and international Baan and SAP implementations. Tom Poppendieck is an enterprise analyst and architect, and an agile process mentor. He focuses on identifying real business value and enabling product teams to realize that value. Tom specializes in understanding customer processes and in effective collaboration of customer, development and support specialists to maximize development efficiency, system flexibility, and business value. Tom is co-author of the book Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit, published in 2003, and its sequel, Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash, published in 2006. |

Giuliani Gets Exposed As Fraud by Firefighters
Giuliani Bungled Preparation in Years After 1993 Attack on Trade Center. Critical failures by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani before, during and after the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, raise serious questions about his ability to be commander-in-chief. In this thirteen minute documentary, fire fighters, fire officers and family members give dramatic testimony about Giuliani's leadership failures. Their dramatic stories tell how Giuliani failed to provide the FDNY with radios that worked, which led to the deaths of 121 fire fighters inside the World Trade Center's North Tower because they were unable to hear orders to evacuate. Fire fighters also point to Giuliani's poor judgment in placing his emergency command center at 7 World Trade Center, a known terrorist target after the 1993 bombing. This video documents the mayor's lack of respect for the fallen when he called off the recovery effort at Ground Zero on Nov. 1, 2001, after $200 million in gold bullion was recovered. "We produced this documentary because we need to make sure our members know Giuliani's real record," said IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. "The UFA participated in this video to correct the myth that Rudy Giuliani has perpetrated on the American public," said Steve Cassidy, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York, IAFF Local 94. The Giuliani campaign defended the former mayor's record by issuing a release that lists items he purchased for FDNY. "But the campaign, with its response, has neglected to address the charges of failed leadership outlined in our documentary," President Schaitberger said. "Purchasing equipment for a fire department doesn't qualify any mayor to be president," said Jack McDonnell, president of New York City Local 854, the Uniformed Fire Officers Association. "If that's the litmus test for president of the United States, then most mayors in this country qualify for the job. Giuliani is running on his 9/11 record, and his 9/11 record is laced with failures in preparedness and response," McDonnell said. The IAFF has not made an endorsement in the 2008 presidential election. Local 94 supported President George W. Bush in the 2004 election, while the IAFF and Local 854 endorsed Sen. John Kerry. The International Association of Fire Fighters, headquartered in Washington, DC, represents more than 280,000 full-time professional fire fighters and paramedics in every state in the United States and in Canada. Southwest Airlines' Colleen Barrett on 'Servant Leadership'
Most of the U.S. airline industry is under assault from skyrocketing fuel prices and a sluggish economy, but the message that Southwest Airlines president Colleen Barrett brought to the recent Wharton Leadership Conference was about the importance of treating employees and customers well. Innovative leaders such as Southwest chairman Herb Kelleher and smart management of non-human resources -- especially Southwest's fuel purchasing hedges that have saved the company more than $2 billion -- have certainly helped the airline post profits for 35 consecutive years. But the foundation for all that, she said, has been making the satisfaction of employees and customers the highest priority. |

Chuck Baldwin at the 2008 Conservative Leadership Conference (Part VI)
Dr. Chuck Baldwin was the Constitution Party's 2004 vice-presidential candidate and their 2008 presidential candidate. He is a former Republican and currently pastors a Baptist church in Florida, as well as hosts a radio show. He is a graduate of Liberty University and was mentored by the late Dr. Jerry Falwell. Dr. Baldwin's presidential bid was officially endorsed by Texas congressman Dr. Ron Paul. Dr. Baldwin gave this speech in Las Vegas, NV, at the Conservative Leadership Conference in late September; speakers also included 2008 Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr and vice-presidential candidate Wayne Root, among others. Though the conference had a relatively small turn-out, Dr. Baldwin gave a superb speech that was filmed by Michael Cox, the Nevada state representative for the Baldwin campaign. Michael first posted the speech at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2451217627148245722&ei=3gEVSdLHEpmSrALM78TJDQ and has graciously allowed me to post it here (I divided it into six parts). I attended this conference and heard this speech live, and found the material to be important enough that I determined it should absolutely be made available via YouTube. Dr. Baldwin talks about pertinent issues facing the United States today, including the inherent problem of the two-party political system of Republicans and Democrats; illegal immigration and border control (exemplified by the Ramos & Compean case, which was prosecuted by the corrupt U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton); the New World Order and globalism; NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT, the World Trade Organization and the North American Union (including the Security & Prosperity Partnership of 2005); the United Nations, NATO and other types of world police international meddling that greatly concerned the Founding Fathers; the Law of the Sea Treaty and International Criminal Court; excessive political partisanship as condemned by President George Washington in his farewell address; the socialism orchestrated by Democrat and Republican politicians alike; economics and big-government bailouts to failing banks; the fiat money system of the Federal Reserve; the Internal Revenue Service (IRS); big brother laws, such as the misnomer Patriot Act, created under the administration of President George Bush; and why Sarah Palin is not going to save the Republican Party. President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden are not going to save America, folks, and neither would have Senator John McCain. The real CHANGE we need is a return to traditional, Constitutional conservatism. You can learn more about Dr. Chuck Baldwin at his 2008 campaign website at http://www.baldwin08.com/ and his radio show website at http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/ I highly recommend that everyone read his most recent column, "Conservatives Lost More Than An Election" at http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/c2008/cbarchive_20081107.html You can see his other columns at http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/speech.html If you like what you hear from Dr. Baldwin, I suggest you check out the Constitution Party (America's third-largest political party) at http://www.constitutionparty.com/ You can also get great information from http://www.campaignforliberty.com/ and http://www.restoretherepublic.com/ and http://www.restoretherepublic.net/ and http://www.downsizedc.org/ and http://www.jbs.org/ and http://www.conservativeusa.org/ |

Apollo 13 - Leadership and team Work
One of the real-life heroes of Apollo 13, veteran Apollo and space shuttle astronaut Ken Mattingly shares the true story behind the most inspiring example of crisis management in recent memory. Portrayed in the hit film by Academy Award-nominee Gary Sinise, Mattingly is the Command Module Pilot who was pulled from the flight at the last minute for medical reasons, only to spearhead the ground crew's efforts to save his friends and fellow astronauts once their moon mission went horribly wrong. At the lecture podium, Mattingly's gripping account of teamwork and peak performance has received rave reviews from corporations and community forums around the nation. He recounts his training and comradery with fellow Apollo 13 astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise, his horror when the mission went awry, and his role in coordinating the ground crew's frantic race against time to save them. He also brings the story full circle with a look at the space program today and the emerging role of private industry in satellite communications. As Mattingly notes, the miracle of the Apollo 13 story was not in one person rising to the occasion, but in hundreds and thousands working at peak performance to do the impossible. Setting the stage with footage from the movie, Mattingly's lecture, available exclusively through GTN, is a must for any organization emphasizing team building and personal achievement. 14 At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 15 David longed for water and said, "Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!" 16 So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the LORD. 17 "Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this!" he said. "Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?" And David would not drink it. 2 Samuel 23:14-17 (NIV) As David refused to drink the water from the three mighty men I couldn't help but capture a similar attitude by Ken Mattingly who refused to sleep while the crew in Apollo 13 were in a crisis. Ground Crew: "You need a break Ken?" Ken: "If they don't get one then I don't get one" Great leadership principles Oswald Chu - "ICOC Facebook to face global e-vangelism" |

Awakening to Leadership
http://www.sikhnet.com/dvd - In the video SSS Harbhajan Singh Khalsa (Yogi Bhajan) starts by talking about just "being" a Sikh verses experiencing and living as a Sikh (He related this in the terms he called "Concept" and "Conception"). He then talks about how Sikhs have been betrayed by the so called "Sikh Leadership" and how youth should not rely on them and BECOME the leaders themselves. He shares inspiring experiences from his youth before the partition of India when he was part of creating the All India Sikh Student Federation. He explains how the youth worked together and formed a powerful force with Sikhi as a base and through trust, honesty, equality. He shares the ingredients of what made this work and how youth of today can do this as well. |
