With only three weeks until the election, Barack Obama has a 14-point lead over John McCain, according to a new poll. Obama also leads in the personality department. Dean Reynolds reports.

Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mark Begich has now taken the lead in his race against Republican Sen. Ted Stevens. After counting some of the absentee and early votes, Begich is in the lead by 814 votes. (Nov. 13)

NEW YORK -- With five games to spare, Derek Jeter surpassed Lou Gehrig for the all-time lead in hits at Yankee Stadium, but it was the White Sox who pulled ahead of the Yankees on Tuesday, 6-2. Andy Pettitte has already been given the honor of pitching the final game at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, so this was to be his final tune-up before that memorable occasion. The left-hander might have hoped for better results, working six innings and allowing four runs on six hits. Pettitte walked three -- one intentionally -- and struck out four as he left trailing, ensuring he will head to the mound against the Orioles searching for his first victory since Aug. 20. He allowed a solo homer to Alexei Ramirez, his 18th, leading off the third, and ran into more trouble in the fourth as the White Sox batted around to add three runs. The damage came on run-scoring hits by Ken Griffey, Jr. and Paul Konerko, plus a bases-loaded walk to Juan Uribe that forced in Chicago's fourth run. In the seventh, Jose Veras allowed back-to-back two-out doubles to Brian Anderson and Jermaine Dye to bring around Chicago's fifth run, and Dan Giese allowed another run in the eighth. The first inning saw Jeter notch his 1,270th career hit at Yankee Stadium, moving past Gehrig for the most knocks in the Bronx, a record he tied with a three-hit game on Sunday. The single was a hard ground ball that shot through the legs of third baseman Juan Uribe. Standing at first base, the shortstop doffed his batting helmet to a loud ovation as his image was displayed on the video screen in right-center field. The Yankees struck starter Gavin Floyd for runs in the third and fourth innings. Brett Gardner singled to open the third, stole second and scored when Johnny Damon's double fell into right-center field, and Jason Giambi cracked his 31st home run to lead off the fourth. New York loaded the bases in the fifth but Giambi worked a 12-pitch at-bat before striking out, and the Yankees also twice stranded runners at third base with one out or less. The Yankees have two games remaining against the White Sox before playing a three-game weekend series against the Orioles to close out Yankee Stadium.

Senator Barack Obama has grabbed the number one Democratic spot in Iowa as voting for the 2008 presidential election begins there today. That's according to a new poll just released. Barack Obama is in a four-point lead over John Edwards. Hillary Clinton has faded to third. In the Republican race, Mike Huckabee expanded his lead six points over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson is in third place. Today's contest in Iowa kicks off a state-by-state battle to choose Republican and Democratic candidates for the November election to replace President Bush. Meanwhile, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg is denying that he'll run for president. There's been speculation recently that the mayor may jump into the race after it was announced that he would attend a forum next week. That forum is being led by a bipartisan group that believes the Republican and Democratic parties are out of touch. Bloomberg is now independent. Earlier today, he said he's going to focus on being mayor and wants to see an independent approach in the '08 elections to stop partisan bickering and special interests. The U.S. Justice Department is launching an investigation into the CIA's destruction of those videotapes. The tapes showed harsh interrogation techniques of terrorism suspects. The CIA says it acted lawfully, but critics say the agency ignored court orders and investigators' requests that it hand over evidence in various terrorism cases. A California congressman is retiring after being diagnosed with cancer. Democrat Tom Lantos says he will not seek re-election this year because of his disease's treatment and development. The 79-year-old, who's the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, says he has esophageal cancer. Lantos is the latest of more than a dozen members to announce plans to leave the House at the end of the year. That's all for now. This is a very serious issue. Tens of thousands of children have been placed at risk of lead exposure this year because of contaminated imports. Millions of toys have been recalled. This situation reflects the grave weakness of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the lack of federal controls on imported toys. What can parents do? Most importantly, parents should avoid all painted toys this holiday season. Also they should avoid brightly colored plastic toys, because some of them have been shown to contain high levels of lead. Our recommended toys this year are: • unpainted wooden toys • sports equipment such as balls and gloves • books Parents should consider writing letters or sending emails to their Senators, Congressional representatives, state and local officials, and the White House to complain about the current situation. It is simply not right that this country should allow the entry of millions of dangerous toys in the weeks before the holidays.
