All I did to survive 2 pairs of CICHLIDS this evening !!!
It has been a day since my first set of CICHLIDS (pet fish) died and within 24 hours I have another 2 sets. It is really nice to to see beautiful colored fishes in tanks their movements and behaviors as long as you do not pet them . This was the first time in my life that I tried to pet fishes and that too CICHLIDS. As an uneducated buyer i bought a pair of them and put them in a small bowl with brown colored stones and also a green artificial plat to make the entire set look beautiful. This was the first time that I fely "BUYERS be AWARE" . When I found them dead and that too 1 probably gasping for oxygen and the other who had jumped from the bowl and died on the floor in a corner and could not even be seen. I strongly believed I was due to lack of food but was it true ? I promised myself that I will do all that I could to understand how to survive the next 2 pairs which I bought 2 hours after I found their mates dead . This time I bough a bigger bowl , gravels , small green artificial plant and most importantly an aerator. All that I had to understand was the following :- Family:Cichlidae. Class: African. Distribution:The northwest coast of Lake Malawi. Size:Approx 3 inches. Diet:Small aquatic invertebrates found on rocks, in the wild. In captivity, they will take a wide range of commercially prepared foods. Dietary carotene is necessary in order to keep the electric yellow color of the most famous morph. Water Temperature:75-79 degrees Fahrenheit (24-26 degrees Celsius) . Water Chemistry:Hard water, dH of 10-11, pH: 7.5-9.0. Lifespan:10 years. Natural Conditions:Since they are Malawian cichlids, Electric Blues are lacustrine fish that live in waters of high pH and hardness. They live between 10 and 40 meters deep. Thus, they are virtually uninfluenced by both water pressure and photosensitivity and will do well in a standard Malawi tank. Description :The standard electric yellow variant is a small, rock-dwelling Malawian cichlid. It is, as the name states, a bright yellow. Its dorsal fin is 1/3 covered with a horizontal black stripe that ends just below the tip. The same goes for the anal fin (which also fades to white at the very tip of the fin). There also exist the Malawian egg spots on said fin. The leading edge of the pectoral fin is white and that half of the fin is black and fades into the yellow just as the fin meets the body. Behavior : There are mbuna and there are mbuna, which come complete with the anger and territoriality expected of cichlids. Fortunately, these belong to the former group. Thus, they are among the most popular Malawian cichlids. They won't try to hold territory as much as the others, so they will do well in a tank full of conspecifics. They are so gentle that mouth brooding females won't be harassed by conspecific tank mates! Miscellaneous : This fish has only been described once officially, and that was by Fryer (ironically, this individual was the namesake of another Electric cichlid, the Electric Blue) in 1953. So friends guess I have been able to provide you some information on surviving CICHLIDS. The best part of this 24 hour CHICHLID survival journey was went my flat ran out of electricity the oxygen supply to the fish bowl stopped. Can you believe I connected the aerator to the UPS alongwith a 100 Watts bulb while the entire flat was dark. |

(Geologists may regard the name oil shale as a misnomer, since the rock does not necessarily consist of a shale and its kerogen differs from crude oil; it requires more processing than crude oil, which affects its economic viability as a crude-oil substitute and increases its environmental impact.[1][2]) Deposits of oil shale are located around the world, including major deposits in the United States of America. Global deposits are estimated as equivalent to 2.8 trillion to 3.3 trillion barrels (450×109 to 520×109 m3) of recoverable oil. The chemical process of pyrolysis can convert the kerogen in oil shale into synthetic crude oil. Heating oil shale to a sufficiently high temperature will drive off a vapor which processing can distill (retort) to yield a petroleum-like shale oil—a form of non-conventional oil—and combustible shale gas (the term shale gas can also refer to gas occurring naturally in shales). Industry can also burn oil shale directly as a low-grade fuel for power generation and heating purposes and can use it as a raw material in chemical and construction-materials processing. Oil shale has gained attention as an energy resource as the price of conventional sources of petroleum has risen and as a way for some areas to secure independence from external suppliers of energy.[7][8] At the same time, oil shale mining and processing involve a number of environmental issues, such as land use, waste disposal, water use, waste-water management, greenhouse-gas emissions and air pollution. Estonia and China have well-established oil shale industries, and Brazil, Germany, Israel and Russia also utilize oil shale. Oil shale consists of organic-rich sedimentary rock: it belongs to the group of sapropel fuels.[11] It differs from bitumen-impregnated rocks (tar sands and petroleum reservoir rocks), humic coals and carbonaceous shale. While tar sands originate from the biodegradation of oil, heat and pressure have not (yet) transformed the kerogen in oil shales into petroleum.[2][12][13] Coal contains a higher percentage of organic matter than oil shale. In commercial grades of oil shale the ratio of organic matter to mineral matter lies approximately between 0.75:5 and 1.5:5. At the same time, the organic matter in oil shale has an atomic ratio of hydrogen to carbon (H/C) approximately 1.2 to 1.8 times lower than for crude oil and about 1.5 to 3 times higher than for coals.[2][11][14] Oil shale does not have a definite geological definition nor a specific chemical formula. Oil shales vary considerably in their mineral content, chemical composition, age, type of kerogen, and depositional history.[15] Oil shale seams do not always have discrete boundaries and the carbonaceous content varies. Scottish oil shales frequently exhibit a change from no carbonaceous content through a range of carbonaceous content and back to non-carbonaceous shales. As a rule of thumb, the better the oil shale, the more chocolaty-brown the streak and the more woody the sound when struck by a hammer. The organic components of oil shale derive from a variety of organisms, such as the remains of algae, spores, pollen, plant cuticles and corky fragments of herbaceous and woody plants, and cellular debris from other aquatic and land plants.[2][16] Some deposits contain significant fossils; Germany's Messel Pit has the status of a Unesco World Heritage Site. The mineral matter in oil shale includes various fine-grained silicates and carbonates.[11][6] Geologists can classify oil shales on the basis of their composition as carbonate-rich shales, siliceous shales, or cannel shales.[17] Another classification, known as the van Krevelen diagram, assigns kerogen types, depending on the hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen content of oil shales' original organic matter.[15] The most commonly used classification of oil shales, developed between 1987 and 1991 by Adrian C. Hutton of the University of Wollongong, adapts petrographic terms from coal terminology. This classification designates oil shales as terrestrial, lacustrine (lake-bottom-deposited), or marine (ocean bottom-deposited), based on the environment where the initial biomass was deposited.
