PLA 4th Hospital diagnoses for Monks in Kumbum Monastery

Recently PLA 4th Hospital organized doctors to provide free diagnosis for Monks in Kumbum Monastery. Kumbum Monastery (sKu-'bum Byams-pa gling) (also known as Ta'er) located in a narrow valley about seventeen miles southwest of Xining is a Buddhist monastery in Qinghai. It was there in the former that Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism was born in 1357 and was later founded in 1583. Its superior monastery is Drepung, immediately to the west of Lhasa. According to one tradition, Tsongkhapa's father took the afterbirth and buried it here, and soon a sandalwood tree grew on the spot. Another version has it that the tree grew up where drops of blood from Tsongkhapa's umbilical cord had fallen on the ground. In any case this tree became known as the "Tree of Great Merit." The leaves and the bark of this tree were reputed to bear impressions of the Buddha's face and various mystic syllables and its blossoms were said to give off a peculiarly pleasing scent. The four-storied golden-roofed temple built around the tree where Tsongkhapa is said to have been born is called Serdong or 'Golden Tree' and is considered the holiest place in PLA 4th Hospital is located in Xining City, the capital of Qinghai Province.

Shigatse and Gyantse - Tibet Part 2

SHIGATSE:Shigatse is the second biggest city in Tibet and capital of the Tsang Province. The main highlight of this place is the magnificent Tashilhunpo Monastery. It is one of the six great Gelugpa monasteries and home of the Panchen Lama - who is, by the way still hidden by the Chinese. Situated at the foot of Drölma Ri, there is also a nice Kora (or pilgrimage) around the monastery possible. Dont miss it, since you will have a great view over the huge monastery and the complete city of Shigatse. GYANTSE: Gyantse is a little town (the third biggest in Tibet though) dominated by the Gyantse Dzong from the top of a mountain. From far away you can see the Dzong reigning from the peak over this part of the fertile Nyang-Chu valley. The main attraction is the Pelkor Chöde Monastery with its Kumbum Chörten, the largest Chörten in Tibet.Gyantse offers a beautiful monastery embraced by a hillside and a defencsiv wall around it. Inside this area you also find the Kumbu Chörten (or Stupa). You can walk up all the way over five floors. Take your time, because on every floor there are plenty of rooms beautifully decorated with Bhuddas and Demons. From the top you have a great outlook over the monastery and the town all the way to the Gyantse Dzong. The whole area gets dominated by the Gyantse Dzong that reigns on the top of a mountain.Dont miss to inhale this incredible atmosphere inside the monastery!

Tibet Adventures

RIH-DVD-TIBET - Tibet Adventures Our first stop in Tibetwas Lhasa an altitude of over 12,000 feet. While in Lhasa, the heart and soul of Tibet we visited many of the sacred places for the Tibetans such as the Potala Palace, the Jokhang, the Drepung Monastery, and Norbulinka. We then journeyed to Gyantse over the Karo La Pass at 16,550 feet and later visited with some villagers. In Gyantse we toured the Kumbum with its many murals. In Shigatse, we saw the Llama dances by monks that ended with the purging of evil spirits from the monastery by a ritual fire. A boat ride took us to the Samye Monastery where we met the chanting monk shown on the cover.

Driving the Scenic Route to Shigatse, Tibet

We stopped at a scenic look out, a glacier at about 5000 m elevation, and Kumbum monastery. It was 300 km total.

Tibet - on top of the world

A very very short summary of my second trip to Tibet in 2006. From Kathmandu all the 1000km on the Friendship Highway past places like Gyantse, Shigatse to Lhasa - the Roof of the World, the Seat of the Gods. A flat tire and a broken axle is just part of the game.

Tibet Trip 2007

Matt and Joona's trip to Tibet in September and October 2007. Lhasa, Shigatse, Samye, Gyantse, Kumbum, Taktser, Shyachung . . . Pardon the slightly wrong spelling of Tibet in Tibetan - bloody Chinese Tibetan writing system!

Tibet

Tibet http://www.flyingmonk.com/tibet.html We visited Tibet in 2002, the Year of the Horse, a very important religious year for pilgrimages and beside Lhasa with its astounding Potala Palace, its amazing surrounding monasteries and religious sites, we were able to travel much further. We visited Ganden Monastery, the seat of Ganden Tripa, the head of the Gelupka order, in the province of U. We visited the province of Tsang, with the remarkable monastery of Sakia, that had such a great role in the history of Tibet, Tashilhumpo in Shigatse, the seat of Panchen Lama whose personality is mixed presently in political controversy, the Gyantse's Kumbum and Pelkor Chonde Monastery and Yamdrok tso, one of the four major religious lakes of Tibet. From there we pursued further to Ngari, Western Tibet, and we did the 3 day kora around Mt. Kailash, the most important holy mountain of 4 religions, an amazing and powerful spiritual experience, joining hundreds of pilgrims and yaks in climbing Droma La at 5630 meters. After the kora around the mountain, we relaxed around the beautiful Manasarovar lake famous also for its own kora, a religious place mentioned 1700 years ago in the Sanskrit Puranas writings. From Ngari, we traveled over grassland to the Nepalese border and back to Tingri where the vista of the Himalayas is majestic. Later we drove to Rongphu Monastery at the base of the Mt. Everest and hiked from the Base Camp up towards the peak, and returned through Shegar to Shigatse, Gyantse and back to Lhasa. Come with us and enjoy all this and many others in two fascinating travel videos: one about Ngari, Kailash, Manasarovar and the area around Mt. Everest.and one about Lhasa and the U and Tsang monasteries.
