Life of the Buddha (Khmer) 14
18. Psychic Therapy. The Buddha speaking on the mind, has also spoken on mental disorders and on the treatment of psychic ailments. The Buddha has traced sorrow as one of the chief causes leading to the arising of mental disturbances. On the death of her only son, Kisa Gotami loses control of her senses and in her madness goes in search of medicine for her dead child. Failing all else she appeals to the Buddha, who realising that nothing would convince her until her mental equilibrium has been restored, sends her on an errand to get him a few mustard seeds from a house where there has been no death. Unabl to accomplish the Master's request, she comes to the conclusion that death is inevitbale and that her only son too had succumbed to it. 19. Compassion to Animals. In the Buddha's time there were various animal sacrifices taking place in India. Innocent animals were killed as Offerings on sacrificial altars to appease the gods, for man's happiness both here and hereafter. The Buddha, however, showed man that it was impossible to obtain happiness for oneself by causing suffering to others, and that the followers of the Buddha if they were so, should avoid making animal sacrifices. At that time the King of Kosala had seen sixteen terrifying dreams in a single night, and was in great fear. To avert the evil influence of these dreams a great animal sacrifice with the killing of thousands of animals was arranged in accordance with the advice given by the Brahmins. Hearing of this, the Buddha advises the King against such a sacrifice, thus saving the lives of all those doomed creatures. From that day to this, no taking of life however small is involved in any ceremony of the Buddha's followers. |

Assassination of Samdech Choun Nat and Emergence of KR
May merits be distributed to these individuals. May these individuals be happy and receive such merits. May they sustain life, which only through "eating" such foods of merits are their life sustained. May all beings across the globe, may they have peace. May they "eat" and remember never to forget. (not sure if they are translated thus?) These are words of admonition?(kaapp) in the (Yangkeng) Theraveda faith. In previous Buddhas, they would chant as thus: "Kai Preah Puta bochea maha decho, thorma bochea mahapannor sonkabochea mahathonang kosala cetinanang boreypunang, yearveknapenang sapengchiyorhanto." Preah Samdech Choun Nat thought that this chant of reverence is not adequate for Buddhas. So, He modified to add another kind of chant: "ikmehiti prithupa tisakare heputhang, thormang sonkhang atipol chiyear minearta peta tinang kunavonta, maiyamai hainyati grathang attha yekheta yevekhaiyek." Translated as: We will pay reverence toward the Buddha, The Dhamma, The Sangha, serving as our Fathers, with these objects of offerings including incense, candles, etc., for the benefit of peace, for the benefit of prosperity, for the benefit of all blessings to all who has favors over us where our parents are foremost for us for a long time. So, Preah Samdech Choun Nat (Cambodian State Monk) allowed Buddhists to chant thus, for He deemed the Sutras to be more fulfilling, wholesome than previous Sutras. This brought on misconceptions by other Buddhists. They accused that the Sutras starting with "ikmehiti..." belongs to Chinese where they came up with the chants so that the incense and candle vendors could prosper. So, here we have the misconception that it is Chinese's Sutras. In actuality, they are not Sutras belonging to Chinese nor Cambodians, but belonging to everybody who take refuge in Buddhism. Cambodian may chant, Chinese may chant. Don't think that these Sutras belong to Chinese nor to any particular ethnic group. They belong to everybody and everybody may chant. So, because of this misconception, the people thought that they could no longer allow the Samdech Choun Nat to live. There intention was to annihilate any trace of religion in Cambodia. So, they aimed to kill Samdech Choun Nat and they accomplished their aim, plunging Khmer people into the abyss of darkness for 3 years, 8 months, 20 days during the KR era. This is how when there is no religion, one is faced with annihilation and extinction such as this, Children may know. |

Ganga Maa Aarti
This video clip depicts the devotion and sanctity of Hindus performing Aarti for Sacred River Ganga which has been accorded the status of a mother and Goddess. This Aarti is performed every evening at the "Har ki Paudi" means the stairs that takes away your sins and purifies you. Anyone who does not believes this has a test to do this. You can keep Ganges Water in any plastic bottle or pot and you shall be amazed to see that it not only smells but also tastes good even after several years besides the fact that many people take bath, throw dead bodies or ashes in it. According to myths this sacred river was brought to earth by Bhagirath from heaven. Bhagiratha was the king who was pious and benevolent ruler of Kosala, a kingdom (now in UP) in ancient India. He was one of the forefathers of Lord Rama, of the Ramayana, the epic in which Bhagiratha's tale is primarily recounted. From the learned men Bhagirath came to know that only the Sacred river Ganga, that flows in the heavens can wash away the sins of his ancestors. Unless he bring her down to the earth to wet the ashes of his ancestors, they will be eternally cursed". Accordingly Bhagirath started to perform a terrible penance. He underwent many agonizing trials and set-backs, but he persevered. At last he obtained the boon that Ganga would flow on earth. However, the earth could not stand the force of her flow, so he sought the help of Lord Shiva to control the river's flow. Shiva arrested major portion of the river in his matted locks and let only a small portion flow to the earth, thereby making it possible for the earth to bear the burden. Ganga washed away the sins, and helped the ancestors of Bhagirath to ascend to heaven. Since she was brought to earth by the efforts of Bhagirath, she is also called Bhagirathi. Indian Mythology states that Ganga, daughter of Himavan, King of the Mountains, had the power to purify anything that touched her. Hindu belief holds that bathing in the river causes the forgiveness of sins and helps attain salvation People travel from distant places to immerse the Cremation and ashes collection ashes of their family / kin in the waters of the Ganga; this immersion also is believed to send the departed soul to heaven. People carry sacred water from the Ganges that is sealed in copper pots after making the pilgrimage to Varanasi. It is believed that drinking water from the Ganga with one's last breath will take the soul to heaven. |
