As Cataratas de Kegon , alimentadas pelo lago Chuzenji, possuem uma superfície rochosa com uma altura de 97 metros. São consideradas como sendo as cataratas mais espetaculares do Japão e também uma de suas paisagens mais fotografadas. Kegon Falls (華厳滝, Kegon no Taki?) are located at Lake Chūzenji (source of the Oshiri River) in Nikkō National Park in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The falls were formed when the Daiya River was rerouted by lava flows. About twelve smaller waterfalls are situated behind and to the sides of Kegon Falls, leaking through the many cracks between the mountain and the lava flows. At 97 m high, it is one of Japan's three highest waterfalls. In the autumn, the traffic on the road from Nikko to Chūzenji can sometimes slow to a crawl as visitors come to see the fall colors. The Kegon Falls are infamous for suicides, especially among Japanese youth.

Kegon Falls at Nikko

This is Kegon falls which spills out of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko. It's interesting because when Mount Nantai erupted, the lava flow blocked the river and created a natural dam. That dam created Lake Chuzenji and Nantai Falls. Another interesting note is that the bottom of Lake Chuzenji is deeper than the base of Kegon Falls.

We stopped by here on our way to Nikkou. It's no Niagara but this place is still beautiful. It's famous for having a bunch of schoolkids always jumping off to commit suicide. Good stuff, huh?

Impressive waterfall fed by the lake 1400m above sea level. My camera (or rather my skills with it) failed to convey just how large it was. I wanted to swim under it but the many barriers pooped on that party. It was stunning nonetheless.

Autumn in Japan begins: Kegon Falls @Nikko

We took 3 normal trains, 1 bullet train, and a bus to get to Nikko. The bus ride was a traffic jam up a mountain while we stood in the aisle because the bus was full. All that to see this waterfall (among other things). It's pretty amazing and beautiful. I think it was worth it.

It is included in Japan's three most renowned waterfalls together with Nachi Falls (Wakayama Prefecture) and Fukuroda Falls (Ibaraki Prefecture). Visitors can go to the bottom of the gorge by elevator. Although its view never fails to enchant visitors throughout the year, Kegon Falls is particularly dazzling when it puts on autumnal colors and when it forms huge icicles in winter.
