The Chinese Bridge Competition sent out delegations to eights countries in early 2008. They spent five months in overseas to sieve contestant rounds after rounds. Total of 110 contestants from 55 countries were qualified for the 2008 competition. They spent 2 days in Beijing: visiting The Great Wall, The Palace Museum (The Forbidden City) and The Institute of Confucius. They were divided into 3 groups; then sent to difference places to experience Chinese cultures. one group went to Xi An (西安) in the inner west; one of the oldest (over 2000 years old) ancient capital cities in the world; best known for its historic sites, architectures, ancient tombs, and some first class world heritage (i.e. clay/stone statues of warriors and horses); 2nd group went to Hang Zhou (杭州): another ancient capital city (over 1000 years old) on the east coast; best known for its elegant southern China view, historic architectures, culture, silk, tea and pearl. 37 contestants in Andrews group went to Zhang Jia Jie (张家界): one of the most sought-after tourist spots in Southern China; extremely well known for its exquisite, picturesque scenery, the harmoniously mixed, colorful cultures, and its Historical Buddhist Temples. Some of the scenes in the movie Crouching tiger, hidden dragon were filmed near Zhang Jia Jie. This is a unique place where its mixed with Chinese majority Han (汉族) and few other minorities (少数民族). One of the minoritys customs in Zhang Jia Jie is the match of love songs singing on the Lake (宝峰湖). When season comes, boys and girls would dress up and sing love songs to their loved ones before pursuing courtship. Usually a young man would sing a love song from his boat to the girl that he has set his eye on. And if that girl would love him back, she would sing back to him from her boat. Andrews group learnt Chinese folk songs and folk dancing in Zhang Jia Jie. I believe they learnt to sing Jasmine flower in here - the most popular repertoire of Chinese folk/love songs; the song they performed at opening ceremony. Some of the contestants joint the love songs matching on the Lake.
