Democracy was restored to its birthplace and Greece became the 10th member of the European Union. Reconciliation of all Greeks was a major goal, the Greek Communist Party was legalized, after 27 years, in 1974. 8. 1980-1985: President of the Republic, he oversaw the transition to a leftist government. 9. 1990-1995: President of the Republic for a second term. He retired at the age of 88 in 1995,having spent 8 years as a Minister, 14 years as a Prime Minister, 10 years as President of the Republic, altogether being half a century in public life. Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien said on the occasion of his death: "On behalf of the people of Canada, I offer sincere condolences to the people of Greece. Mr. Karamanlis will be remembered for his vision and leadership... with his passing Greece has lost one of its greatest statesmen and Europe one of its most prominent political figures and supporters of Democracy". German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel said: "He made every effort in the most admirable way for democracy and the freedom of the Greek people. Constantine Karamanlis was a friend of Germany and a great European. Greece's entry to the then EEC in 1981 was the result of his policy. The remarkable life's work of Constantine Karamanlis instilled respect and recognition in Germany and Europe. Greece and Europe have lost one of the greatest political leaders of the 20th century". Tony Blair the British Prime Minister said:"It was with regret that I was informed of the death of Constantine Karamanlis. The mark which he left, both in Greece and on the world scene in general, will not be effaced for a very long time". On January 1st 1981 the day Greece joined the EEC Constantine Karamanlis said: "...We have confidence both in Europe and in Greece. We have decided to all be Europeans, as Churchill would say, and to all remain Greeks, as Shelley would say. For, to quote Isocrates, the Greeks are not those who are born in Greece but those who espouse the Classical spirit". One can only speculate, what the future history of Greece, would have been like, had King Paul given, on October 5 1955, the mandate to form a government, to Stephanopoulos, instead of, and against all conventional wisdom, taking a chance on a 48 year old man from Proti, Serron. |

Mozart 41st Symphony's 4th movement, the Jupiter Symphony, with its Olympic grandeur, is a fitting tribute to the greatest statesman of post-war Greece. |
