Toronto Discoveries - Humber River Bridge
This video clip was taken on September 29, 2007. On this gorgeous early fall day I decided to explore Toronto's Western waterfront on my inline skates. I parked my car at Marie Curtis Park and bladed eastwards, past some of the condo developments next to the mouth of the Humber River. After Sunnyside Park I skated into the CNE grounds and checked out some of the classical early 20th century architecture there. Following a brief rest in the sun west of Ontario Place I headed back, took my blades off and started to snap some pictures of some of the interesting plants that were growing at the waterfront. I am actually a travel writer who loves to explore international destinations as well as my chosen home town of Toronto. On Youtube you will find hundreds of video clips from a wide variety of destinations. Feel free to check out some of my 700+ articles and interviews on http://www.travelandtransitions.com. Also, my travel e-books containing stories from my trips to destinations such as Sicily, Havana, Mexico City, New York City, Chicago, Florida, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Halifax and many others are available right now at http://www.travelandtransitions.com/e-books.htm. |

1933 Humber 12 sedan with "palm court" music from the 1890's
Posted by John Barnes (7772399). This video of a 1933 Humber 12 sedan (driven by John Barnes ), was taken in Canberra in April, 1989. (The Robert Garran Offices on National Circuit can be seen in the background in one of the scenes ). There are believed to be only four 1933 Humber 12 sedans left in the world. (Only 700 were built in 1933 due to the worldwide depression ). The ons seen here was nicknamed "Herbie". By 1933, Humber Inc. had become part of the Rootes Group, which manufactured Hillman, Humber, Singer, Sunbeam, and Commer vehicles. The Humber chassis, engine, and 4 speed manual gearbox, were built in the UK at Coventry, but the body, (including the front and rear bumpers) was built in Australia by Ruskin, a coach-building company based in Melbourne. The Ruskin Body Works was sold to the British Austin Motor Company in 1949, to build bodies for imported Austin commercial vehicles. The 4 cylinder engine was 1669cc, and developed 42 brake horsepower. It's "rated" horsepower was 12 - hence Humber 12. The car was used by the Mayor of Launceston, Mr.Allen Hollingsworth, in 1933 / 1934 , as his official vehicle. It was shipped to Canberra from a garage in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1988. The vehicle is fully original, except for the addition of indicators (blinkers ). The headlights and side lights were made my Lucas. The white building seen at the end of the video, is the old Parliament House in Canberra (Australia ). A photo of the dashboard can be seen on John Barnes Blogsite. The vehicle was offered to the National Museum of Australia, as part of Australia's history, but they wanted it to be donated free! (Collecting for the National Museum of Australia officially began in 1980). The offer was withdrawn, and the car was sold to a Humber collector in the Northern Territory for $20,000. The fate of the car now (in 2008) is unknown. The background music heard here is "palm court" type music from the 1890's and early 1900's. |
