Religion Panel - Do We Need a Humanist Reformation?

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2008/03/06/Is_Religion_Still_the_Opium_of_the_Masses Institute of Ideas Research and Editorial Director Dolan Cummings argues that mainstream secularists must first re-assess their own beliefs if they wish to challenge radical religion. ----- Panelists Rashad Ali, Andrew Scott, Fariborz Pooya, and Dolan Cummings discuss religion and radicalism. Alex Hochuli moderates the event. We're told that religion today is radical. Islamic extremists, evangelical fundamentalists, Catholic militants - the threat that faith poses to secular society is an aggressive, assertive and vehement one. But historically, the faithful were slated by humanists for their conservatism - where religion went wrong was its opposition to change, not its advocacy of it. So are the religious now radical - or has secular society simply taken on the conservatism of its God-fearing forebears? Dolan Cummings is research and editorial director at the IoI. He edits the IoI's reviews website, Culture Wars and is a co-convener of the yearly Battle of Ideas festival, next taking place in London in October 2007. Dolan's interests lie in the relationship between ideas and politics, the role of the intellectual, ideology, and religion in public life. He is especially interested in the question of intellectual authority and how it is contested. Dolan firmly believes that politics should start from the needs and passions of the public, and that this puts a premium on open debate and free speech. Most recently he has edited a collection of essays, Debating Humanism by contributors to the Battle of Ideas 2005.

"I am Theist, You are Humanist" Song

Unitarian Universalist parody song. Lyrics: You are theist I am humanist I think that you're naive You have no proof to offer as truth, You simply say "I believe" New age bubbles get you in trouble Lost in a feel-good fluff True understanding is quite demanding Praying is not enough. Totally unprepared are you To make a case that's plain Maybe the incense, chants, and drums Have ruined your poor brain. You need someone older and wiser Telling you what to do, You are theist, I am humanist I--will think--for you! I am theist, you are humanist You're locked inside your head. You're existential, self-referential Claiming that God is dead, Occam's razor, Pascal's wager Soul-less tautology Wisdom, traditions, not erudition Make much more sense to me. Totally unprepared are you To let go of your mind. How 'bout a leap of faith, my friend You might like what you find. When you find that you're out of answers You won't know what to do I am theist, you are humanist, I -- will pray -- for you. We cannot agree on anything Each has a point of view, I am theist --- I am humanist That's why we're UU. by Meg and Scott Bassinson of Albany, New York. What an Atheist now a Humanist -aZeroGodist

Hi-Qaulity video: actually 5 min long Pause vid for 30sec as slow to download Transcript-Atheistblindchick BBC discrption for Atheist and Humanist which is what I am going to call myself from now on: What is an atheist? http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/atheism/ 1 Atheists are people who do not believe in a god or gods (or other immaterial beings), or who believe that these concepts are not meaningful. Some atheists put it more firmly and believe that god or gods do not exist. 2 Atheism at a glance: Atheism is the absence of belief in any Gods or spiritual beings. The word Atheism comes from a, meaning without, and theism meaning belief in god or gods. Atheists don't use God to explain the existence of the universe. Atheists say that human beings can devise suitable moral codes to live by without the aid of Gods or scriptures. They think that religion is nonsensical. Religions seem to have done a lot of HARM in the world. atheists often follow the same moral code as religious people, but they arrive at the decision of what is good or bad without any help from the idea of God. 3 Atheist Criticisms of Religion The bad: Religion gets people to believe something untrue. Religion makes people base the way they run their lives on a falsehood. Religion stops people thinking in a rational and objective way. Religion forces people to rely on outside authority, rather than becoming self-reliant. Religion imposes irrational rules of good and bad behaviour. Religion divides people, and is a cause of conflict and war. The hierarchical structure of most religions is anti-democratic, and thus offends basic human rights. Religion doesn't give equal treatment to women and gay people, and thus offends basic human rights. Religion obstructs scientific research. Religion wastes time and money. The good: Religious charities and good works. (me-good work for their own cause, join them to get fed) 4 Occam's Razor: Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily". This is usually simplified to say that the simplest answer is the best answer. 5 Religion comes from Emotions: Human beings believe in God because they want, A father figure to protect them from this frightening world Someone who gives their lives meaning and purpose Something that stops death being the end To believe that they are an important part of the universe, and that some component of the universe (God) cares for and respects them (Atheists argue that since religion is just a psychological fantasy, human beings should abandon it so that they can grow to respond appropriately to deal with the world as it is) 6 Humanism - a positive approach to life: "Humanism is an approach to life based on reason and our common humanity, recognising that moral values are properly founded on human nature and experience alone."-Robert Ashby While atheism is merely the absence of belief, humanism is a positive attitude to the world, centred on human experience, thought, and hopes. The British Humanist Association and The International Humanist and Ethical Union use similar emblems showing a stylised human figure reaching out to achieve its full potential. Humanists believe that human experience and rational thinking provide the only source of both knowledge and a moral code to live by. They reject the idea of knowledge 'revealed' to human beings by gods, or in special books. "Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance, which affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. It stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethic based on human and other natural values in the spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. It is not theistic, and it does not accept supernatural views of reality." -International Humanist and Ethical Union. Humanist ideas: Most humanists would agree with the ideas below; There are no supernatural beings. The material universe is the only thing that exists. Science provides the only reliable source of knowledge about this universe. We only live this life - there is no after-life, and no such thing as reincarnation. Human beings can live ethical and fulfilling lives without religious beliefs. Human beings derive their moral code from the lessons of history, personal experience, and thought. 7 Atheist funerals: Non-believers can find that a church funeral (no matter how well done) for a non-believer is just a formal religious ritual conducted by someone with no knowledge of the dead person, and which doesn't help them to say farewell to someone they love. I'm a Humanist

My favorite rant of all time in any movie comes from the Devil's Advocate. I know, its not a bunch of quotes, but its got some pretty good insight. :) Music- Tori Amos, "You Can Bring Your Dog" Al Pacino(Satan/John Milton): Who are you carryin all those bricks for anyway? God?? Is that it? God? Well I tell ya Let me give ya a little inside information about god. God likes to watch. Hes a prankster. Think about it. He gives man instincts. He gives you this extraordinary gift, and then, what does he do. I swear, for his own amusement, his own private, cosmic GAG REEL. He sets the RULES in opposition. its the goof of all time. LOOK but dont touch. TOUCH, but dont taste. TASTE, dont swallow. HAHAHAHA!! And while youre jumpin from one foot to the next, what is he doin? hes laughin his sick fuckin ass off. Hes a tight ass!! Hes a sadist!!! Hes an ABSENTEE LANDLORD! WORSHIP THAT?? NEVER!! Keanu Reeves(Kevin):Better to reign n hell than to serve in heaven, is that it? (I hate Keanu Reeves--he ruins this whole scene.) Al Pacino(Satan/John Milton): Why not! Im here on the ground with my nose in it since the whole thing began! Ive nurtured every sensation man has been inspired to have. I cared about what he wanted and I never judged him! Why? Because I never rejected him! In spite of all his imperfections, Im a FAN OF MAN!! Im a humanist. Maybe the last humanist. Who in their right mind, Kevin, could possibly deny the 20th century was entirely mine? AAALLLL of it Kevin!! ALL of it. Mine. Im peaking, Kevin. Its my time now.
