A pair of hoverflies (Syrphini sp. , family Syrphidae) making love on the fly. They are really good at hovering! Early-August 2008 in Japan. ホソヒラタアブの仲間でしょうか（種名不詳）。なんと飛びながら交尾していました。写真では見たことあるものの、実際に観察するのは初めて。余りに見事なホバリング（空中静止）なので、初めは見えないクモの糸に吊り下げられているのかと思いました。意外にレンズを近付けても平気。 抱えられた♀は羽ばたかずに時々脚をばたつかせ、飛行は♂に任せているようです。それにしても、何と言う驚くべき交尾法。♂のエネルギー消費もすごそう。交尾中は無防備なのでいつでも逃げられるように捕食対策なのか、ライバル♂に♀を横取りされないよう交尾後ガードなのか、それとも♀に体力を誇示しているのだろうか？　男はつらいよ...。ひょっとしたらトンボの尾繋がりのように産卵行動と関連しているのかも？

Hoverfly (Syrphini?) in the family Syrphidae, feeding on the flower of Philadelphia fleabane (Erigeron philadelphicus). Mid-May 2008 in Japan. アブは名前調べが難解で敬遠してしまいます。自信ありませんがホソヒラタアブの仲間でしょうか（種名不詳）。かなり接近して撮れました。花の方はヒメジョオンと似ていますけど、蕾がうな垂れているのでハルジオン（北米原産の帰化植物）だと思います。

There are about 6000 species of hoverfly and this is one of the larger ones found in Britain. They often have patterns that mimic bees and wasps. Hoverflies are also known as flower flies, or Syrphid flies. Some species help with pest control and some pollinate flowers.
