AUKI TOWN

Auki Town was established by the British in 1903 on the Island of Malaita. It was the district centre for the Malaita District and the District Commissioner was based on Auki. He once a year travel around the island on small vessels visiting the local villages. Until today, Auki Town still remain a relatively small town, with most of the development centered on Honiara. The small businesses that operate in Auki Town face a lot of difficulties after the 2000 crises where local millitants return from Honiara and destroy some of the businesses. At the moment the town is trying hard to develop its infrastructure and move on from the damages after 2000.

Solomon Islands National Anthem

The UK established a protectorate over the Solomon Islands in the 1890s. Some of the bitterest fighting of World War II occurred on this archipelago. Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence two years later. Ethnic violence, government malfeasance, and endemic crime have undermined stability and civil society. In June 2003, then Prime Minister Sir Allan KEMAKEZA sought the assistance of Australia in reestablishing law and order; the following month, an Australian-led multinational force arrived to restore peace and disarm ethnic militias. The Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) has generally been effective in restoring law and order and rebuilding government institutions. Population: 581,318 (July 2008 est.) Solomon Islands Tsunami Trip

This is a condensed version of my six-day assignment to cover the April 2 Solomon Islands earthquake-tsunami disaster. It starts with us flying out of Honiara and landing on the island of Munda, then taking a boat across to Gizo and more boats to Rendova and Renongga islands, aid drops, devastated villages, and a Sunday in church. It ends with us flying out of Gizo (love that runway), back to Honiara.
