WALL STREET - Gordon Gekko - "Greed...is Good"

In Wall Street, Bud Fox is tired of dealing with the small-time cold-calling of Jackson & Steinham, his brokerage firm. His father and he are both sick of the fact that, according to Buddy, "$50,000 does not get you to 1st base anymore." At least not in Manhattan. Mr. Fox, Sr. would gladly have Buddy work for him at the Bluestar Airline company, or at least living rent free back home while he uses his 50k/year salary to get out from under his bills. Unfortunately, Buddy has other plans. Both Buddy and his colleague talk about 'bagging the elephant'. To them, this is getting a shot with the big-money brokers. Enter Michael Douglas as Gordon Gecko. Gecko spends all his time on the phone barking orders to his on-the-street brokers and information collectors. Buddy has to effectively bribe his way into Gordon's office on his birthday with a box of Cuban cigars. However, as Gordon checks his heart rate, his words are "So what's on your mind, Kemosabe. Why am I listening to you?" Gordon shoots down every tip Buddy throws at him, showing Buddy just how behind he is in the game. "Stop telling me information and start getting me some," is the last thing Gecko says to Buddy before he leaves. It doesn't take long for Bud Fox to figure this one out. Next time the two are together, Bud Fox is telling Gecko all about the new FAA ruling that is passing on his father's airline company. Not pausing to think about insider information, Gordon 'greed is good' Gecko buys the company out from under Bud Fox's father. Realizing he's been played like a grand piano, Buddy tries to make the tail wag the dog. Buddy's newly-acquired girlfriend, Darianne (as played by Daryl Hannah) refuses to stick by Buddy while he attacks the high-stakes broker. This only re-enforces a previously mentioned bond between the broker and the interior decorator. In the last five minutes of the movie, Bud Fox learns what the word "low" is all about. He and Gecko do a brief fistfight in a rainy New York park, is stripped of his ability to pay his high-priced apartment, Darianne is back behind Gecko and working on going public, and Buddy is talking to his father about "actually creating something, not just living off the buying and selling of others." Fox walks into a courthouse in the last scene, with a dramatic downshot which shows just how a broker like Fox is intensely insignificant in the Wall Street world.

Nightwish - Master Passion Greed

Who the hell are you to tell me, What to do, what to do, why bother Leech in a mask of virtue Such waste, to ever think of you again Hey Judas, your Christess was our love Hit and run, your will be done Never sorry, never wrong More more more more more Master Passion Greed "Hello how are you? Let me explain one thing. Al for her and more for me Why is it so hard to see? I see no sense in doing this Not enough for me I fick up everything but let me explain." Some day, you shall flee Panting and weak Master Passion Greed All withing me gone but pain and hope Hoping that the pain would fade away Greed, your master passion I feed the mouth that bites me Mammon, opiate of the masses The reek of your lies draws flies Seek her, seduce her, tame her, Blame her, have her, kill her Faest on it all With awakening the tears will begin To my everlasting shame silence took me

Where do I go? There's nothing else to do But live a life full of lies Might be hell or bloody fun There's one thing left to do If I'm strong enough to keep up Greed or purity The time of truth has come Now say your prayers I'm not afraid of How God will judge me later Listen to my words of fear Lavish cars and Curvy girls are great but Solitude remains It doesn't change ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I will put up the off shot and limited edition version of the PV later.

Greed (1924) 1/29

Directed by Eric von Stronheim. Running time approx. 4 hours. Made in 1924. The story of the making of the movie has become a Hollywood legend. Under the aegis of the Goldwyn studio, von Stroheim attempted to film a version of the book complete in every detail. To capture the authentic spirit of the story, he insisted on filming on location in San Francisco, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and Death Valley, despite harsh conditions. The result was a final print of the film that was an astonishing ten hours in length, produced at a cost of over $500,000 — an unheard of sum at that time (though Stroheim's 1921 film Foolish Wives was publicized by MGM as costing over a million) [1]. After screening the full-length film once to meet contractual obligations [2], Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the studio that acquired Goldwyn during production, forced von Stroheim to edit the film to a more manageable length, and, with the assistance of fellow director Rex Ingram and editor Grant Whytock, he reluctantly trimmed the film to about four hours. The film was then removed from von Stroheim's control and cut further, despite his protests. Even key characters were removed from the final version so that it could be screened in a reasonable time frame. Existing prints of Greed run at about two hours and twenty minutes. The hours of cut film were destroyed by a janitor cleaning a vault who thought they were not important film rolls and threw them in an incinerator (although it appears that much of it survived until at least the late 1950s), and this film is known as one of the most famous "lost films" in cinema history. The released version of the film was a box-office failure, and was fiercely panned by critics. In later years, even in its shortened form, it was recognized as one of the great realistic films of its time. Rare behind-the-scenes footage of Greed can be seen in the Goldwyn Pictures film Souls for Sale. In 1999, Turner Entertainment (the film's current rights holder) decided to "recreate", as closely as possible, the original version by combining the existing footage with still photographs of the lost scenes, in accordance with an original continuity outline written by director Erich von Stroheim. This restoration runs almost four hours. The re-edit was produced by Rick Schmidlin. (Other classic films with missing footage include Orson Welles's The Magnificent Ambersons, Frank Capra's Lost Horizon, George Cukor's A Star Is Born and von Stroheim's Queen Kelly). In 1991, this film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
