Grafting is a surgical implantation of a shell nucleus and a tissue graft (a small piece of mantle tissue) into the pearl oyster in order to produce south sea cultured pearls. It is performed at the pearl farm with a selected donor oyster which will be sacrificed and a host oyster.

Mining for rubies on the hills around "Moramanga carrieres" near Andilamena in Madagascar is not an easy task as the area is isolated in the deep of Madagascar Jungle. On this video you can see how the Malagasy miners work in order to enable the other miners to breath in the galleries they dig to search for rubies. The galleries can be 50 meters deep and sometimes up to 100 meters long. The oxygen there is rare as people work with candles and electricity is not available. Hard job but ingenious people... July 2006, here a global view of the Jagdalek ruby mining area in Afghanistan. This place is known to have produce exceptional gems but nowadays ruby mining has officialy stopped. Here is a short movie showing the Davdar emerald mining area, near Tashkurgan in the western Xin Jiang province of China. It is a 360 degree panoramic view that show well this mining area located at 37°21'03"N 75°25'27"E, 3660 meters altitude just 2 kilometers away from the Karakoram highway linking Kashgar in China to Islamabad in Pakistan. This major regional communication axis was known for centuries as a branch of the "Silk Road". You can see the Karakoram highway in the green valley near the hills where the mines are located. While visiting a "Pinctada maxima" pearl farm in mergui archipelago we collected several wild "pteria penguin" oyster. In one of these large oysters we were lucky to find a tiny natural pearl... "Palei" in Burmese. More info: www.fieldgemology.org

June 2005: Imagine 15.000 people rushing in a remote area of Madagascar jungle for a ruby rush: You will have a muddy city ruled by men during the day and by rats by night! Note: as I was not able to sleep with rats running on me all the night, I passed my 2 nights there seated outside the bedroom around a fire... Safe? Not really: This is I think the way I got malaria as during my 4 months traveling it was the only time I remember to have been attacked by mosquitoes and 3 weeks after in Tanga, Tanzania after I was useless for 5 days. GemEx Systems has been the light performance standard in the diamond industry since 1998. GemEx introduced the concept of scientifically measuring the light performance of diamonds and consumer have embraced this metric of diamond evaluation as demonstrated by the great success that GemEx customers have had selling diamonds with the GemEx Reports. The GemEx BrillianceScope Analyzer, which uses patented spectrophotometer technology, measures a diamond's white light (brilliance), color light (fire) and scintillation (sparkle). It then rates each of these three measures compared to other diamonds of the same shape. The scale for each shape was set by measuring thousands of diamonds to determine the highest and lowest amount of white light, color light and scintillation possible for each shape. The Light Performance Report includes the three bar graphs and also shows images of the diamond under 5 different light views used for measurement of Light Performance.
