These are some photos of several of my trips to Nigeria, Republic of Benin & Togo attending masquerade events. Egungun is the traditional Yoruba performance of bringing ones departed family, and Gelede is in essence a dramatic performance to honour and celebrate the feminine essence of womanhood in Yoruba society.

Gelede Connexxion citaro 9143, Leidschendam 16-6-08 in duinrell outfit

This video was made on a four day workshop with Menelva Harry (choreographer) and Nicola Moses (dancer) from the Gelede Dance Company based in Oxford. The idea was to create a back projection that Nicola could dance along to on stage. Menelva writes - Hi, that was a fun project! 2003 or 2004? The focus was to explore the fusion of contemporary dance and Bagua's (Martial Arts) fluid and rhythmical quality, emphasising on movement from the spine. The commissioned project was called MIST (movement in space and time) which we kept as its title Gelede :)
