Joshua Hillmann plays Falla Fantasía Baetica (2 of 2)
"Live" performance of Manuel de Falla's Fantasía Baetica. Recorded April 20th, 2008 in Katzin Concert Hall at Arizona State University. Joshua Hillmann, piano Background: Manuel de Falla was, with Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados, a leader of the Spanish musical renaissance of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While 'nationalism' was an important aspect of his musical make-up, he was far from being narrowly folkloristic in style or outlook. Alert to contemporary developments in European music, he responded especially to the work of French composers and of Stravinsky. The Fantasía Baetica of 1919 was commissioned by and dedicated to Artur Rubinstein, who premièred it in New York in 1920. 'Baetica' was the Roman name for southern Spain -- roughly modern Andalusia, the home of flamenco. The Fantasía is Falla's last major work in the flamenco-inspired style which he had exploited so effectively in scores such as El amor brujo (Love, the Magician) and El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-cornered Hat). It has been described as his 'musical farewell to Andalusia', and indeed, while never abandoning his Spanish roots, he turned in a neo-classical direction in the 1920s. The piece is in three clearly defined sections, the second being a short, slow 'Intermezzo' and the third a varied reprise of the first. Falla's colourful, imaginative piano writing conjures up the sounds of the guitar, the stamping and clapping of flamenco dance and the inflections of the cante jondo style of flamenco singing. The Popovich Brothers of South Chicago
Filmmaker Jill Godmilow (with folklorists Ethel Raim and Martin Koenig) made this film in 1977 when there was a community of 1100 Serbian-Americans families in South Chicago. They worked in steel mills, drove trucks, taught school, played tennis and golf, watched television, and went to church on Sunday. But what connected them to their family, church and community and provided the deepest expression of their identity was their traditional Serbian music and the Popovich Brothers were a constant source of that music. |

Il Giglio di Nola a Lisbona - dal Tgr del 24/06
Among many folkloristic festivities, the Feast of the Gigli is without doubt one of the most spectacular. It's dedicated to the Bishop Paolino and its origins go back to the V cent. a.C., immediately after his death. The eight Gigli are very heavy wooden obelisks, 25 meters high and covered with imaginative and artistic papermache coverings: among them there is an imposing boat, with the Turk (Barbarian) in which remembers the sea crossed by S. Paolino for the return to his country. The Gigli and the boat are carried on the shoulders by a paranza of about 120 men who, guided by a capoparanza, with great skill make them dance, rotate and advance in involving march rhythm played by a fanfara who finds place on the Sunday following the 22 June (02.07.2006) when, until late in the night, and always in the traditional order, the Gigli cross the roads of the historical center, in the jubilation of the population and in the wonder of the tourists (not to lose on Sunday morning). Of particular interest also the Historical Procession of the Orsini and the Way of the Faith. |

Stockholm Katarina Boys' Choir in Sardinia Ave Maria
Directed by Lars Eve Nilsson. this fantastic choir presents a classic of Petterson. The katarina Boys' choir has been founded by the same Larse Ewe Nilsson who is also the actual conductor. Currently the choir is composed by about twenty young singers who were brought up (sopranos and contraltos) during the years, and by ten adults prevalently tenor and basses. During this last period he has enriched the wonderful young voices and the musical life of the choir, starting from the scores written in English which has been of vital importance for the development of the linguistic thematics of the choir. This Swedish choir regularly participates at various religious expressions such as masses, processions and religious services such as novenas and religious chants. Every year this choir organizes a trip abroad in very important cities such as Rome, London, Paris, New York, Helsinki and more recently in Austria and at Venezia. This year the Choir has landed in Sardinia into two different locations: Porto Torres and Santu Lussurgiu. Kataraina boys' choir presents a classic repertoire which is made up of great operas but also by polyphonic choral chants and folkloristic songs of the Swedish popular and religious tradition. |

Il'inskaja Pjatnytsa performs on Easter, 2007 in RIGA
WELCOME TO SPRING, 2008! Let's CELEBRATE! I filmed this one year ago on March 25, 2007, which was Easter Sunday. A number of folk ensembles performed in the Old City of Riga and on top of "Bastion Hill (or Bastejs Kalns in Latvian)" just outside of the old town. This is footage of the ensemble Il'inskaja Pjatnytsa performing on top of Bastejs Kalns. (Bastion Hill is what remains of the ramparts that once protected the city of Riga). ACTUALLY, I should mention that singing here is not the full ensemble, but just 2 of its members. . .what incredible voices these young women have! Leading participants in some dances to these songs is a middle-aged fellow who is the director of the ensemble. Il'inskaja Pjatnytsa is a gem of Riga. Truly one of the best ensembles dedicated to presenting Russian folk music in an authentic or village-based style, Il'inskaja Pjatnytsa is admired by folklorists everywhere. On that note, I am not that interested in commenting on the ironies of one of the best Russian ensembles being based in Riga, other than to say that within the folklore community of Latvia, they are highly admired and beloved. Love of folk culture should be (and often is) a source of transcendence beyond nationalism. This time of the year is positively magical, anywhere where there is such dramatic change in season. I found it to be an especially wonderful time to be in Riga. For one who is very interested in folklore and folk culture, there was a lot going on. Throughout the Spring Equinox/Easter season are a number of opportunities to see folklore groups performing songs and rites welcoming the Spring. Participating in all these events was the perfect way to come out of Winter and into the Spring. I was myself busy performing with the Latvian folk ensemble Skandinieki, and was on my way home from a performance in Old Riga when I heard these voices of the Il'inskaja women bellowing down from Bastion Hill. Happy Spring Equinox! |

Magyar tamburazene. Mađarska tamburaška glazba
Az 1975-ös tévéfelvételen (részlet Sárosi Bálint: Cigányzene c. ismeretterjesztő sorozatából) a zenekar két mohácsi zenekar tagjaiból tevődik össze: Peti Kovács István (itt ő a vezetőprímás) zenekarából és Balogh József (itt: basszprím tamburás a hátsó sorban) zenekarából. Állítólag a mohácsi Halászcsárdában készült a felvétel. A két zenekar testvérekből, rokonokból állt, a felvétel szereplőiből öten már meghaltak; egyedül Peti Kovács István, a prímás él közülük. Ő szép kort tud maga mögött, 87 éves, de mind a mai napig muzsikál. Ezzel a felvétellel is tisztelgünk előtte, jó egészséget kívánva: Isten éltesse sokáig a magyarországi tamburakirályt!
