Fluidized Bed

Low Reynolds Number Fluidzed Bed. This is a closeup of the middle section of a fluidized bed. The cell is 30cm tall, by 8cm wide, by 0.8cm deep. The particles are monodisperse glass beads of diameter 309 microns, at an average volume fraction of 10%. The liquid (glycerol/water) is pumped upwards at the base of the cell through the particles to achieve fluidization. Fluidization results in a steady state system where the particles are perpetually sedimenting, and the average particle velocity is zero. The viscosity is high enough here that the Reynolds number is smaller than 1. What can be seen here are the swirling motions due to particle velocity fluctuations that spontaneously arise

Simplicity Chemical Reactor requires a small pump or powerhead for operation (SOLD SEPERATELY). A fluidized bed chemical reactor is the most efficient way to implement chemical filtration. The Simplicity Chemical Reactor is not only super-efficient, it is also the easiest and most user-friendly way of implementing chemical filter media in any sump type filter. The Simplicity Reactor has been designed to accept any loose filter media. Media that is sold in bags or pouches must be removed from its pouch and poured directly into the reactor. This will ensure bypass free chemical filtration. The Simplicity Reactor employs 300-micron screens for containing media, making it suitable for even very fine medias such as ion-exchange resins and very small-grained carbons. The symmetrical design of the reactor offers a screen self-cleaning feature. Whenever screen clogs with aquarium debris and the flow rate becomes reduced, removing reactor form base and flipping it 180 degrees restores flow rate. The Simplicity Chemical Reactor can be operated in two distinct modes: MODE 1 - fluidizes up to 8 oz (225 g) of media at flow rates up to 100 GPH (378 LPH), and MODE 2 - up-flows through up to 16 oz (454 g) of media at flow rates up to 500 GPH (1893 LPH). Both operational modes are equally efficient and the specific fluidization characteristics are media type and flow rate dependent. In this respect the reactor is self-regulating, continually providing bypass free chemical filtration through a broad range of flow rates. The reactor works equally well whether it is partially exposed or fully submerged; however, it must remain in upright position to work properly.

Dynamics of meteor impacts

Karen E. Daniels, Joyce E. Coppock, and Robert P. Behringer The video shows the dynamics of two-dimensional laboratory-scale meteor impacts visualized using photoelastic particles for the impact bed. The dark circle in the center of the images is the 5 cm diameter meteor. The network of force chains is shown in false color, with blue representing weak contact forces and green/yellow strong. The meteor forms a crater, visible following each impact. Images were collected at 210 frames/s and are shown at 7x or 70x slower, as indicated by the caption frames. The thumbnail movie clip shows data at a 70x speed reduction with no captioning. The upper (red) curve accompanying the images shows a time trace of the meteor position, while the lower (yellow) curve plots a trace of the total force in the network. The duration of curves is 0.28 s. Remarkably, while the meteor decelerates monotonically, there are damped force oscillations within the impact bed. The minima in the force network correspond with fluidization of the bed in the region of the meteor.
