While the feluccas glide silently over the water, dotting the river with their enormous white sails. No other place in Egypt has the luminosity and silence that reign in Aswan.

En Aswan, Felucca en el Nilo

When I was in Aswan in Egypt in January 2005, I took a trip on the Nile on board a felucca.

A short video of a Felucca taken from the Botanical Gardens near Aswan. The music is not added, it was playing on a nearby stereo.

A boy came up alongside our Felucca on the Nile, asked if we were English, and then proceeded to sing..

this was in luxor, egypt. i told the young boatman to play me a traditional nubian song while floating on the nile and he came up with this one.

felucca (Arabic: فلوكة) is a traditional wooden sailing boat used in protected waters of the Red Sea and particularly along the Nile in Egypt. Its rig consists of one or two lateen sails. They are usually able to board ten-some passengers and the crew consists of two or three people. Despite being made obsolete by motorboats and ferries, feluccas are still in active use as a means of transport in Nile-adjacent cities like Aswan or Luxor.
