The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello
Now playing in the YouTube Screening Room: http://www.youtube.com/ytscreeningroom. Nominated for an Oscar and for a BAFTA award, Jasper Morello is a short feature made in a unique style of silhouette animation developed by director Anthony Lucas and inspired by the work of authors Edgar Alan Poe and Jules Verne. In the frontier city of Carpathia, Jasper Morello discovers that his former adversary Doctor Claude Belgon has returned from the grave. When Claude reveals that he knows the location of the ancient city of Alto Mea where the secrets of life have been discovered, Jasper cannot resist the temptation to bring his own dead wife Amelia back. But they are captured by Armand Forgette, leader of the radical Horizontalist anti-technology movement, who is determined to reanimate his terrorist father Vasco. As lightning energises the arcane machineries of life in the floating castle of Alto Mea, Jasper must choose between having his beloved restored or seeing the government of Gothia destroyed. Set in a world of iron dirigibles and steam powered computers, this gothic horror mystery tells the story of Jasper Morello, a disgraced aerial navigator who flees his Plague-ridden home on a desperate voyage to redeem himself. Also winner of the Grand Prix award at the Annecy Animation Festival, Jasper has also won the top honours at the Canadian Film Centre's Worldwide Short Film Festival, Best Animation at Flickerfest 2005, Best Animation at the Sydney Film Festival Dendy awards and Best Animation at Toronto worldwide shorts. |

Animation depicting Fuller's geometric explorations - Whitney Museum
Digital animation by Michelle Chang with Helen Han and Temple Simpson. This animation presents the geometry that is the basis of many of Fuller's key ideas and concepts. At the beginning, twelve spheres are packed as closely as possible around a single central sphere. As the spheres shrink and disappear, they generate a polyhedron in which all edges and all radii are of equal length. This shape is what Fuller called a vector equilibrium. One of the characteristics of a vector equilibrium is its ability to contract by folding in on itself. The animation demonstrates how this simple geometric shape can be transformed to create several complex polyhedra. Next, it produces a different version of a vector equilibrium that Fuller called tensegrity—short for a stable structure of tensional integrity. In the last part of the animation, a map of the entire globe is transferred onto the vector equilibrium, which unfolds to produce a flat map of the earth made from six squares and eight triangles. Unlike conventional world maps, Fuller's vector equilibrium map represents the world with minimal distortions to the relative size of the continents. Ebaby!'s Chinese Food Explorations 1
One of the best things about traveling is all the different foods you get to try. There is Chinese food in the US, but it's not nearly as good as the food in China! Plus there are lots of things you can't get in the US. Americans know all about snacks, or eating between meals, but they're more likely to snack on a chicken leg, or drum stick, than, say, the chicken's gizzard! And it is relatively hard to find herbal jelly in the US too. Watch Captain Jeff try these out and more in our first food video, and stay tuned for insects in the next one! Ebaby!'s Chinese Food Explorations 2: Insect Edition
You can pretty much take anything and deep fry it in hot oil and it will taste good. Bugs are the last thing you want in your house, so why would you want them in your belly? Well, Captain Jeff says that deep fried centipede is the bomb, or the best thing ever. Then Jason, John and Jeff all grub on some scorpion. Would you ever eat a scorpion? Here's a tip. If you give it a shot, be prepared to chew for a very long time. Inner Explorations of Vedic Tradition
From the works of Living Enlightened Master Paramahamsa Nithyananda. In this clip taken from the discourses titled, "The Power of no Judging & Detach Naturally", Swamiji teaches us deep truths about the vedic tradition. He tells us that in Vedic tradition we do not teach any set of rules or dogma. In this tradition children are first initiated into Gayathri where they are told to meditate on superconciousness. The student is given a torch in the form of meditation and encouraged to explore on his own. He goes on to teach us that only the tradition or religion discovered by us will expand our being and give us joy. Swamiji goes on to expound on Mahadeva's sutra and tells us that when Shiva is telling us to drop even the Masters' form, it means we should drop everything and then only drop the Master. Often peopleuse this sutra conveniently to drop the master as and when they can or when the master starts his spiritual surgery on the disciple. The complete discourse may be ordered online at www.lifeblissgalleria.com |

The Chinese Junk design and Zheng He's Treasure Fleet
The Chinese Junk, "the most successful ship design in history" and bit of the story of 15th Century Zheng He and his "Treasure Fleet" with Fu-chuan junk. The internal division system flat hull, the Chinese rudder (used many centuries before other cultures), and water tight bulkheads (developed in the 1st century!), are discussed. Marine engineer Cedric Bell demonstrates how the junk sails worked, using battons and rings with balance weights so they could sail into the wind like a modern yacht. He also shows the concrete the ancient Chinese poured into the hulls of these huge ships to strengthen and stiffen them. interviews with Dr. Stephen Davies, Zhi Gang, and Qi Haining and Gavin Menzies. Zheng He (a Muslim eunuch), was China's legendary fifteenth-century explorer. After displaying his capabilites against the Mongols in 1390, and helpingthe prince Zhu Di usurp the Ming throne in 1402, Zheng He (who stood six feet tall!) was given command of over 300 ships (the largest fleet the world hadever seen) and over 25,000 men to "unite the four seas" and spread Chinese trade, influence and power abroad. Zheng He went all over South China seas and Arabia, to spots in Pacific ocean also. If he and his emperor had just lived a bit longer, he probably would have "discovered" America too, and history would have been very different! But after the Yongle emperor died in 1424, and the rulers of China again reverted back to the inward-looking and no foreign explorations characteristic of the Confucian traditions that had long served the throne, it all ended. But for a short time China ruled the seas, with ships four times the size of Christopher Columbus', and reaching East Africa 75 years before Vasco da Gama. Zheng He's Fujian tablet read in part: "We have set eyes on barbarian regions far away," hidden in a blue transparency of light vapors, while our sails, loftily unfurled like clouds day and night, continued their course as a star, traversing the savage waves as if we were treading a public thoroughfare." The modern Chinese goverment has embarked on a massive reproduction of some of these boats, overseen by the Dragon Boat Development Company in Nanjing. Spending $10 million over 3 years, they are getting the reproductions done correctly with care, even using the ancient technology to build them. It is part the Chinese goverments efforts to showcase it's open and tolerant past, try to demonstrate a history of trading and international contacts. But Zheng He's explorations were not always benevolent... |

The Secret of the Soul Pt.1
William Buhlman is a leading expert on out-of-body experiences. The author's thirty years of extensive personal out-of-body explorations give him a unique and thought provoking insight into this subject. During the last eight years he has conducted an international out-of-body experience survey that includes over 16,000 participants from 32 countries. The provocative results of this survey are presented in his latest book, The Secret of the Soul. As a certified hypnotherapist, William incorporates various methods, including hypnosis, visualization and meditation techniques in his workshops to explore the profound nature of out-of-body experiences and the benefits of accelerated personal development. Through lectures, workshops and his books the author teaches the preparation and techniques of authentic spiritual exploration. William returned to share the latest observations and developments in out-of-body experience (OBE) research. During these experiences a person moves into an astral body realm which is actually another dimension of existence, he explained. This type of 'travel' can have a number of benefits. For Buhlman, it gave him verification that consciousness survives outside of the body, and during such states a person can receive healing energies. Many alien abduction reports may actually be misperceived OBEs, he said, noting that when a person leaves their body, they attract attention from a variety of beings that wish to communicate. The notion of form is quite fluid in this realm-- Buhlman said he often perceives of himself as a ball or teardrop of energy. The key to achieving an OBE is persevering with a selected technique for a period of at least 30 days and to practice it on a couch rather than a bed, he noted. Incan shamans may have had to prove their OBE skills by identifying the Nazca Lines animals (which can only be seen from an aerial perspective), he added. Save The Earth funds research project on Davidson Seamount
The Davidson Seamount is a spectacular geologic feature on which recent explorations have documented dramatic biological discoveries (some featured on the BBC production "Planet Earth"). The exploration of Seamounts is relatively novel, because we only recently have the technology to access these deep areas. This project would fund a postdoctoral researcher to compare the biology on Davidson Seamount to other seamounts as well as non-seamount surrounding areas in the Pacific Ocean. This work may help finalize decisions on whether to protect Davidson Seamount by including it as part of the National Marine Sanctuary. |

Ethics of Blame
Harvard Professor Thomas Scanlon is best known for his explorations of rights, freedom of expression, and contractualist moral theory. His work has largely been motivated by two central topics: how we assess the moral rightness of an action, and why we give moral considerations priority in guiding our actions. He has published widely on freedom of expression, the nature of rights, conceptions of welfare, and theories of justice, as well as on foundational questions in moral theory. Automating & Customizing the Web With Keyword Programming
May 16, 2008 lecture by Rob Miller for the Stanford University Human Computer Interaction Seminar (CS547). Rob Miller discusses some of the explorations into keyword programming in the web automation domain, and also in other domains such as Java development. One surprising result is that programming language syntax often has relatively little information content, and can be inferred automatically from only a handful of keywords -- allowing us to design programming systems that reduce the learning and complexity burdens on their users.
