Western Ghats - Rain forests of India
The Western Ghats are a mountain range in India, run along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separate the plateau from a narrow coastal plain along the Arabian Sea. They contain the largest patches of moist deciduous forest and rain forest in southern India. These forests are home to diverse fauna and flora, many of them showing affinities to the Malayan region, but are increasingly threatened by human activity. Several national parks and other protected areas lie within the range, but it is estimated that only a small fraction of the Western Ghats remains in pristine condition. The Silent Valley National Park in Kerala is considered by many to be the last tracts of virgin tropical evergreen forest in India. Biogeographers have long recognized the distinctive plant and animal communities of the Western Ghats. Many of these faunal and floral elements are not found anywhere else in India except in parts of northeastern India. The Western Ghats are also home to many endemic species, and the endemism is especially high in the amphibian and reptilian fauna. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Ghats |

Santiago Foothills: Mountain Ecosystem Conservation
The Andes Mountain Range extends for thousands of kilometers, forming the spine of Latin America. Chile contains the longest stretch of these mountains, which tower above the nation's capital, Santiago. The mountains are home to a Mediterranean ecosystem, "the matorral and sclerophyllous forest," that is unique to this part of the planet. Due to the high level of endemism among the almost 500 species of flora and fauna found only in these mountains, this ecosystem is classified as a high conservation priority at global level. A project called "Protege" (Protect) was created with the support of seven municipalities that border the mountain range. The mission of Protege is to create a large natural park in Santiago's foothills (13,352 hectares) to preserve the biodiversity of the area, protect the flora and fauna, and contribute to building a more nature-connected society. Most of the support for the implementation of the Project came from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the World Bank, starting in 2002. Three years after receiving the GEF funding, the project has achieved many results that are helping to consolidate the vision of the park. Protege is building up a solid body of experiences and lessons learned for dissemination to groups involved in similar efforts, both in Chile and abroad. |

Reserva Tehuacán Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve
Mexican Botanic Garden named after biologist Helia Bravo Hollis. The importance of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán is the great floristic diversity of the zone. About 2700 species; high diversity, and 910 genera of seed plants and high endemism, 30%; threatened species. The zone was declared Reserve of the Biosphere on September 11,1998 by the president of Mexico. The India You Don't Know!
India encompasses some of the world's most biodiverse regions. It hosts three biodiversity hotspots: the Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas, and the Indo-Burmese border region. These hotspots have numerous endemic species. India's 3,166,414 square kilometres shows a notable diversity of habitats, with significant variations in rainfall, altitude, topography, and latitude. The region is also heavily influenced by summer monsoons that cause major seasonal changes in vegetation and habitat. India forms a large part of the Indomalayan biogeographical zone and many of the floral and faunal forms show Malayan affinities with only a few taxa being unique to the Indian region. The unique forms includes the snake family uropeltidae found only in the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka. Fossil taxa from the Cretaceous show links to the Seychelles and Madagascar chain of islands. The cretaceous fauna include reptiles, amphibians and fishes and an extant species demonstrating this phylogeographical link is the Purple Frog. India is home to several well known large mammals including the Asian Elephant, Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Lion, Leopard and Indian Rhinoceros. Some of these animals are engrained in culture, often being associated with deities. There are about 2546 species of fishes(about 11% of the world species) found in Indian waters. About 197 species of amphibians (4.4% of the world total) and more than 408 reptile species (6% of the world total) are found in India. Among these groups the highest levels of endemism are found in the amphibians. There are about 1250 species of birds from India with some variations depending on taxonomic treatments accounting for about 12% of the world species. There are about 410 species of mammals known from India which is about 8.86% of the world species. The World Conservation Monitoring Centre gives an estimate of about 15,000 species of flowering plants in India. Video Credit: Wilderness Films India Ltd |

Invasion Of The Australian Christmas Crab (HQ)
To watch in HQ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91jY8toD0Io&fmt=18 The Christmas Island red crab (Gecarcoidea natalis) is a species of terrestrial crab endemic to Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean. Although restricted to a relatively small area, it is estimated that up to 120 million red crabs may live there, making it the most abundant of the 14 terrestrial crab species on Christmas Island. Christmas Island red crabs eat mostly fallen leaves and flowers, but will occasionally eat other animals, including other red crabs if the opportunity arises. The carapace is up to 116 mm long, rounded, and encloses the gills. The claws are usually of equal size, unless one becomes injured or detached, in which case the limb will regenerate. During that time, it will be the smaller of the two. The male crabs are generally larger than the females, while adult females have a much broader abdomen and usually have smaller claws. The broader abdomen of the female Christmas Island red crab only becomes apparent in the third year of growth. Christmas Island red crabs live in burrows, in order to shelter from the sun. Since they still breathe through gills, the possibility of drying out is a great danger for them. They are famous for their annual migration to the sea in order to lay their eggs in the ocean. During the migration, the crabs cover the routes to the coast so densely that they can be seen from the air. Volunteers shovel the crabs off the roads and, although no harm is intended, some of the countless millions of crabs inevitably get injured. Early inhabitants of Christmas Island hardly ever mentioned these crabs. It is possible that their famous large population size was caused by the extinction of the endemic Maclear's Rat, Rattus macleari in 1903, which may have kept the crab's population in control. An exploding population of the Yellow crazy ant, an invasive species accidentally introduced to Christmas Island and Australia from Africa, is believed to have killed 15--20 million red crabs in recent years. |

The Sufferings and Survivals ( Human Rights Violations )
The women and children in Burma are suffering daily together with the men who are also abused , tortured, and killed daily.Especially political prisoners need international help. And the Mons, the people without a country, this is the next issue we all should not ignored This is a call to CRC, CEDAW, CRMS, HRP,IB,IDP,UNHCR,UDHR,UNICEF, WHO ,etc If you want to be informed more about this pl visit http://www.aappb.org/pounzan.html (Torture is endemic in Burma's interrogation centers and prisons, and serves the dual function of breaking down suspected political dissidents and instilling fear into the population. A new AAPP report, The Darkness We See: Torture in Burma's Interrogation Centers and Prisons, documents for the first time the true scale of torture used on political prisoners since 1988.) Learning Behind Bars Deprived of any reading or writing material, political prisoners have discovered that Burmese cheroots and plastic bags can be valuable learning materials. In this link is a series of photographs which show the process of Learning Behind Bars. Photographs by Htain Linn. http://www.aappb.org/behindbar.html Prisons There are 43 major prisons currently in Burma. Over 20 house political prisoners.
