Today Mayu wanted to head up to Eiheiji Temple, about 30 minutes from our home to take some photos of the "koyo", or autumn leaves because the temple grounds are full of the most beautiful Japanese maple, and other trees that turn gorgeous colours for autumn. We will be going back...

Established in 1244 and Japan's most active zen meditation monastery since the late 16th century, Eihei-ji, Temple of Eternal Peace, is about 30 minutes by bus from Fukui and is home to about 50 elders and 250 black-robed trainees. This serene community, set on the slopes of a mountain and surrounded by cedars, is moss-green in summer, and serenaded by cicadas. In winter, snow arrives to transform the complex into a glistening white mountainscape.

Dogen Zenji, o fundador da Escola Soto Zen e de Daihonzan Eiheiji, nasceu em 26 de Janeiro de 1200; durante o Período Kamakura da história Japonesa, no ano seguinte à morte de Minamoto Yoritomo. Diz-se que seu pai foi Koga Michichika, Ministro de Estado, e que sua mãe foi Ishi, filha de Fujiwara Motofusa. Provavelmente, o jovem Dogen Zenji viveu em meio ao conforto. Porém, aos treze anos de idade, ele subiu o Monte Hiei e no ano seguinte raspou sua cabeça e tornou-se monge. Diz-se que ele se tornou monge ao sentir a impermanência do mundo na ocasião da morte de sua mãe, quando ele tinha oito anos de idade. I took a long bike ride across Japan to Kyoto with two "friends." Here they are in an irreverent look at the trip. All shots were taken with the video setting of a still image digital camera. I am happy with the beginning and the end and the rest is garbage. A garbage sandwhich if you will. Enjoy.
