Electricity use and efficiency of servers and data centers: A review of recen...

Google Tech Talks December, 4 2007 The Internet economy depends on a reliable computing infrastructure. While earlier reports of information technology using vast amounts all electricity were grossly exaggerated, these facilities still use electricity, and this use is growing rapidly. Recent analysis indicates that data center electricity use in both the US and the world roughly doubled from 2000 to 2005, and this growth is expected to slow only modestly over the following five years. Growth of this magnitude represents a substantial business opportunity for technology companies. This talk will describe results of recent work analyzing trends in total data center power use and how this growth varies by major world region. It will also explore the misplaced incentives and institutional failures that impede data center efficiency investments on a large scale. Finally, it will describe business, government, and research efforts to improve efficiency in these mission critical facilities, including recent work by the Energy Star program to promote server and data center efficiency. Speaker: Jonathan Koomey Dr. Koomey held the MAP/Ming visiting professorship in energy and environment at Stanford University for the 2003-2004 school year, and is now a Consulting Professor at Stanford. He is also a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), in Berkeley, California. For more than eleven years he led the End-Use Forecasting group at LBNL, which analyzes markets for efficient products and technologies for improving the energy and environmental aspects of those products. The group develops recommendations for policymakers at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy on ways to promote energy efficiency and prevent pollution. He's also a Research Affiliate of the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley.

Fallkniven A1: Compact Efficiency

The A1 is just 14 oz but sports a nearly 1/4" thick blade. From my other "clinic" videos, I've demonstrated how such a thicker blade makes wilderness tasks easier, expending less energy. This is a huge advantage of this compact survival knife that few others possess. Other great features of the A1 include: laminated VG10 steel that will serve well in high moisture areas (and CeraCoated in black), a comfortable handle, full tang that can deliver defensive impacts, a convex grind, a good Kydex (now Zytel) sheath, and a reasonably price for such a high quality blade. This is the type of knife that disproves the oft-heard custom knife maker criticism that says production blades suck. A limitation of the design is its 6.3" blade which for me is on the short side for a wilderness blade. However often weight and size are very important and our system needs will prevent carrying a larger, heavier blade. In those situations this Fallkniven A1 is ideal and it will serve admirably as both a wilderness or tactical fixed blade. Improvements could include a quick detach method for the sheath, a longer handle (by just 1/2"), and maybe one day a full flat grind :-). Also please NOTE that I had reports on the brittleness of this laminated VG1 steel and ("mtbaddict" has his A1's tip break off) it seems you'll trade off some toughness for increased rust resistance. Still, the A1 is a capable blade and compact in dimensions, that can serve you well in the woods. SAFETY NOTE: These videos will show imperative common sense safety measures to keep YOU safe from your own blades (and falling timber). Accidentally cutting YOURSELF is the biggest danger you will face in the woods. Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 7 out of 10

#134 - Generator HHO run time efficiency tests, Part 4 of 4

For latest news please visit my web site http://www.alt-nrg.org/ In this mini-series I attempt to answer the age old question posed by our critics "Are we on the right track or just spinning our wheels?" For this test I am using a gasoline powered AC generator. This is the ideal platform to test with because it's carbeureted. No fuel injection ECU, O2, MAF, etc to deal with. No EFIE required. ================================================= I have collected the data. You be the judge.

Michael Dell Talks Green at IT Energy Efficiency Summit

Michael and other Dell team members spent the greater part of Wednesday morning last week in Washington, D.C. participating in the IT Energy Efficiency Summit. Dell partnered with CIO magazine to host this first-ever event designed to provide CIOs and other IT decision makers with insight into energy efficient computing strategies. In a moderated question and answer session with CIO publisher emeritus Gary Beach, Michael discussed various aspects of the greening of the IT landscape. (See highlights from his comments in vlog below.) He discussed Dell's drive to become the greenest technology company on the planet, our ReGeneration movement, how we consider the environmental impact behind everything we do as a business and the importance of carbon intensity—stay tuned for more on this front.

EBN Dry Cell - Efficiency Map (w/data)

This is the efficiency data plot for the EBN 6 inch Dry Cell. (Energy Builders Network) Plotted efficiencies for 4N4, 5N3 and 6N2 configurations. Best MMW was 6.618 (unsustainable) in the 6N2 configuration (@ 0.267 LPM) Best sustainable MMW was 6.174 in the 5N3 configuration (@ 1.214 LPM). Best output was 1.569 LPM @ 5.991 MMW in the 4N4 configuration. Data referred to in this video can be found here: http://www.martin02.org/~lutherp/EBN_Dry_Cell_HHO_data_2008-08-17.pdf At this time, I would like to see a 5N4 or 5N5 arrangement of this cell. You sacrifice a little bit of production for a gain in efficiency. You can make this back up by adding plates. It is also my expectation that with a 5N configuration, the heat rise will be shallower and perhaps reduce the requirement of additional external cooling I will be inquiring to see if it will be possible to get 4 more plates and 4 more gaskets without having to buy an entire cell. I was not able to come to a conclusion regarding an advantage for wiring 4N4 as 3 positive with 2 negatives or 3 negatives with 2 positives. I will need to test for this again at a later date.

Leatherman Squirt P4: Sub-compact Efficiency

The Squirt can handle most everyday tool taskings. Other Squirt models, as of 2008, include the E4 (wire strippers) and the S4 (scissors version). For me, the P4 is the most useful with it tiny pliers, pen blade, flat bladed drivers, file (cool!) and wonderful punch awl (all MTs should have this!). But this 2.0 oz sub-compact MT does have some limitations: don't expect the pliers to have great metal cutting or torque capabilities. Blame Isaac Newton as it's just a function of the Squirt's tiny size. As far as tiny MTs go, this is the best.

Energy Efficiency: The First Fuel

EECS 500 Seminar Harvey M. Sachs, Ph.D. Senior Fellow October 7, 2008 There are many barriers to increased efficiency, but all can be handled with an appropriate policy environment. It turns out that the social sciences are as important as engineering in achieving change: behavioral patterns and conventional economic analyses can impede progress. Examples drawn largely from the built environment will illustrate some policy levers, such as tax policy, efficiency standards, building codes, and market transformation programs, and their limitations.

"ISUZU D-Core" Next Generation High Efficiency Diesel Engine

DigInfo - http://movie.diginfo.tv Isuzu's D-Core is a next-generation, high efficiency diesel engine series designed with proprietary Isuzu technology and is expected to be the core for future diesel engines. The new series utilizes a Variable Geometry System, or VGS, turbocharger to achieve high output from a small engine. In addition to maximizing the torque in proportion to the engine displacement, Isuzu pursued a more lightweight, compact design, and as a result, the various performance features demanded in engines such as fuel efficiency and weight were improved from the ground up to achieve high level environmental performance.
