Sus sucesores fueron ocupando progresivamente la colina, desarrollando un complejo palacial de grandes dimensiones. La fachada de la Domus Augustana daba al Circo Máximo y estaba formada por un cóncavo pórtico curvilíneo de dos pisos. Desde este pórtico se accedía a un patio con un estanque central, que daba paso a los apartamentos privados, construidos de manera aleatoria, cubiertos algunos con bóveda. Al norte del patio arrancaba una escalera monumental por la que se subía al piso superior, donde encontramos dos amplios peristilos. En la zona norte se ubicaba el sector oficial. Las diferentes dependencias se distribuían alrededor de un nuevo patio porticado. En el oeste se hallaba el triclinium con dos ninfeos adyacentes mientras que en el este se situó la basílica o tribunal imperial, junto al salón del trono o aula regia. En el lado sur se encontraba un largo jardín también porticado. Las habitaciones estaban decoradas con lujosas pinturas murales, como posteriormente hizo Nerón en su famosa Domus Aurea.
