With that, five flute calls are made to gather the five distinct Native American tribes that call Utah home. Before that, an eagle is seen flying over the stadium. Here are the distinct tribes of Utah, according to the Utah website: - Ute Nation; - Goshute Nation; - Shoshoni Nation; - Paiute Nation; and, - the Navajo-Dineh Nation. After that, an exchange of gifts and greetings between the chiefs of these Nations and certain Olympic athletes take place, before the grand pow-wow dance takes center stage involving all the Utah Native American tribes.

I'm playing along with the song "Not Alone" by All That Remains. The solo took me a while to transcribe and get up to speed due to the odd tapping/sliding transitions. You will notice a transition in the video just before the solo. This is because I put two takes together instead of trying to play the song perfectly in one shot. Throughout most of this song there are two distinct guitar parts, and I am only playing one of these parts. For this reason, my recorded guitar may sound a bit different than what you're accustomed to hearing from the album track. If you pan the album track all the way to the left or right, you will hear these two distinct guitar parts. One of our local drumming groups performing in downtown Shizuoka city, Japan. This particular group includes many school age kids. Drums are called taiko in Japan where drumming has a long tradition within the spheres of entertainment, religion and warfare. The Japanese have produced several distinct drum styles of various sizes, most of which are played with a stick (though hand drums are also used). Traditional drummers may perform alone or in the company of wind and string musicians. Ensemble style taiko performances called kumi-daiko (as seen in this video) are a relatively recent development in the world of Japanese drumming and a style which has gained the attention of many outside Japan. Kumi-daiko performances are typically very impressive with numerous drummers beating out distinct rhythms on various sized taiko. The drummers can produce deep, resonant tones which carry for long distances and produce an unforgettable and almost visceral experience in the hearer. Taiko drum heads are made of cowhide dried and tightly stretched before being attached to the drum by iron nails (byou-uchi daiko style) or sewn onto iron rings (tsukushime-daiko style). Drum heads may be used for several years before needing to be re-stretched, though the cowhide is normally discarded after one or two stretches. Most Japanese drums are formed from the limb or even the trunk of the Japanese Elm (keyaki) tree while other types of wood are also sometimes used. Especially large drums may have been made from ancient trees (up to 1200 years old!) which are thought to imbibe the drum with a spiritual significance and presence.

Polar Ring Galaxies, such as NGC4650A, are a class of galaxy which have two kinematically distinct components that are inclined by almost 90 degrees to each other. These striking galaxies challenge our understanding of how galaxies form; the origin of their distinct components has, until now remained uncertain, and the subject of much debate. This simlation shows the formation of a polar disk galaxy. The animation begins with the gas expanding with the Hubble Flow, before collapsing under gravity and forming a disk. After a major merger, a disk galaxy rapidly re-forms. Subsequently, gas begins to be accreted from a direction highly inclined to the inner disk, with a polar disk forming which is perpendicular to the original disk. this is a non-narrative movie, and it has no audio. it is basically a "poetic examination" of my wife's Multiple Sclerosis. i've never made a non-narrative movie before, so i did my best to find some distinct (and not-so-distinct) images to fit that theme. the movie was commissioned by a friend, with the intention that it would be projected onto a make-shift screen of woven linen that he was building. the movie was made with the intention that it was only a portion of a larger piece, so i'm not entirely sure if it's engaging enough to hold someone's interest for 4 minutes. regardless, i decided to put it on here in case my friends or associates were interested in watching it, as the installation itself was constructed out-of-state.
