Remember - Dieppe
Remember. Remember the day : August 19th, 1942. The Dieppe Raid. On that day the Canadian 2nd Division launched a raid on the Channel coast city of Dieppe. With british Royal Marines, US Army Rangers, and Free French commandos, the 2nd Division was to seize and hold the city for a few hours to test German defences in preparation for an invasion to liberate Europe from nazi oppression. Operation Jubilee as it was called quickly turned into an embarrassing disaster and the Canadians were slaugthered on the beaches. In the course of a single morning, the Canadian lost 3000 men, half the strength of the 2nd Division, killed, wounded, captured. August 19th, 1942 went down in history as the darkest day of the Second World War for Canada. From the disaster lessons were drawn and would help ensure the success of Operation Overlord, D Day, on June 6th, 1944. Dieppe was finally liberated in September 1944, by the 2nd Division. http://www.junobeach.org/e/2/can-eve-mob-die-e.htm Remember. |

WW2 - Dieppe Raid (part 1 of 2)
WW2 footage. German Wartime Newsreel. The Dieppe Raid, also known as The Battle of Dieppe or Operation Jubilee, during the Second World War, was an Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, Seine-Inférieure on the Northern coast of France on 19 August 1942. Over 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, were supported by large British naval and Allied air force contingents. The objective was to seize and hold a major port for a short period, both to prove it was possible and to gather intelligence from prisoners and captured materials while assessing the German responses. No major objectives of the raid were accomplished. 3,623 of the 6,086 men who made it ashore were either killed, wounded, or captured. The Allied air forces failed to lure the Luftwaffe into open battle, and lost 119 planes, while the Royal Navy suffered 555 casualties. |
