Death Penalty Deterrence myth

The Dallas Morning News had an editorial trying to outlay why the death penalty is a miserable failure as a deterrence. What the news media refuses to understand, it is not about deterrence, but justice. It is getting even, retribution, and closure for the victim's family. Nowhere in the editorial was the impact upon the victim's families mentioned. The media is attempting to influence the debate by twisting it. During the debate about the death penalty has the media ever evenly outlined the victim's families take on the subject? Nor has the media ever tried to examine the discussion from a point of administering justice

The Myth of Nuclear Deterrence

Did nuclear deterrence "keep us safe" for sixty years during the Cold War? Does it, in other words, work? For those who already have nuclear weapons, does nuclear deterrence justify their keeping them? Nuclear deterrence is based on the assumption that in moments of extreme national crisis attacks against cities (or the threat of attacks against cities) will matter. Much of our thinking about this question, however, ignores the available evidence and recent reinterpretations of important cases. New Jersey-based independent scholar Ward Wilson, winner of the 2008 Doreen and Jim McElvany Nonproliferation Challenge, will offer a critique of nuclear deterrence and a detailed discussion of the historical evidence that contradicts the concept.

Four Myths About Nuclear Weapons: Hiroshima, H-bomb ...

Ward Wilson, grand prize winner of the 2008 Doreen and Jim McElvany Nonproliferation Challenge Essay Contest talks about a new security paradigm at a luncheon seminar at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. He argues that the Japanese did not surrender because of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since nuclear deterrence relies on the threat of city destruction and city destruction is an ineffective way to wage war, he calls the efficacy of nuclear deterrence into question.

Bird Control: Robot Goshawk in action

Bird flight has always intrigued mankind. Great deal of that interest arose from the desire to fly like birds ourselves. I designed an artificial bird , a fully scaled Goshawk with profiled wings, actively utilizing aerodynamic principles just as Nature does and still flies at 20 knots! Bird flight observation creates strong impressions of the huge diversity in flying techniques. The beauty, the variety and fascination of bird flight attracted my attention long ago and by designing flapping wing models I wanted to understand a bit more about bird flight. Aerodynamic interpretation of a bird wing is extremely intricate, not only for its complexity including the differentiation in arm and hand part, but also because of the exceptional dynamic shape which changes dramatically in the course of a stroke cycle. Pattern and profile of my goshawk are so natural that it scares away seagulls and crows during flight, and clearly both humans and animals cannot perceive the difference. This patended Robot Bird of prey "Robird" breaks the barrier from bird scare to intelligent control with high reliability, unparalleled effectiveness and interesting possibilities for prevention and insurance policy control. Robird is a technological breakthrough which uses the inborn instinct of birds to achieve an unique efficacy and precision in bird deterrence. As a professional falconer I can tell you that if a bird of prey does not flap, she does not hunt. That's why "a look a like bird-shaped rc model plane" with fixed wings cannot do this job. With Robird controlled bird deterrence you can: 1. Engineer the direct and reliable vectoring of single birds or entire colonies. 2. Effectively deter birds day after day without the risk of habituation. 3.Avoid bird groups splitting up: essential for secondary safety. 4. Experience an unequaled span of effect, both in terms of action radius and size of colonies. 5. Build up a preventive shield by skillfully simulating a raptor territory. 6. Efficiently deter almost all known bird species (except other raptors). 7. Last but not least, deter birds while causing minimum distress in the animals, pacifying even the staunchest environmental activist.

Bird Control: Robot Peregrine Falcon versus Seagulls and Crows

Bird flight has always intrigued mankind. Great deal of that interest arose from the desire to fly like birds ourselves. I designed an artificial bird , a fully scaled peregrine falcon with profiled wings, actively utilizing aerodynamic principles just as Nature does and still flies at 20 knots! Bird flight observation creates strong impressions of the huge diversity in flying techniques. The beauty, the variety and fascination of bird flight attracted my attention long ago and by designing flapping wing models I wanted to understand a bit more about bird flight. Pattern and profile of my falcon are so natural that it scares away seagulls and crows during flight, and clearly both humans and animals cannot perceive the difference. When the peregrine falcon is hunting, it starts with soaring and flapping in circles high up in the air, crows and gulls think she awaits a chance to stoop down on one of them as her prey at tremendous speed.. This patended Robot Bird of prey "Robird" breaks the barrier from bird scare to intelligent control with high reliability, unparalleled effectiveness and interesting possibilities for prevention and insurance policy control. The Last Castle ( vol. 8)

Three-star General Irwin (Robert Redford) was a prisoner of war in Vietnam and a revered hero in the Persian Gulf and Bosnian campaigns. Now, he has been court-martialed for disobeying orders and he is sentenced to serve time at The Castle, a maximum-security military prison run by Colonel Winter (James Gandolfini), a hard-nosed disciplinarian. A battle of wills soon emerges between the two men, as The Castle's prisoners and guards find themselves drawn to Irwin's natural leadership abilities. As Irwin inspires the prisoners to find the dignity and pride that they have lost, he threatens Winter's strict regime, leading to a conflict that can only have one winner. From Rod Lurie, West Point graduate and director of DETERRENCE and THE CONTENDER, comes this intense dramatic thriller featuring battles both psychological and military. Stars Redford and Gandolfini, joined by gifted newcomers Mark Ruffalo and Clifton Collins, Jr., give excellent performances as a group of very different military men thrown together into an ugly situation. Filmed on location at the now-closed Tennessee State Penetentiary, THE LAST CASTLE is a hard-edged tribute to courage, honor, and loyalty.

The Last Flight of the Vulcan XH558

The Vulcan was part of the RAF's V bomber force, which fulfilled the role of nuclear deterrence against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Avro Vulcan XH558 was the first Vulcan B2 to enter service with the RAF in July 1960, and the last to fly (with the RAF Vulcan Display Flight in 1992). The Vulcan to the Sky Trust is labouring to restore this historical aircraft, get it air-worthy and keep it that way. www.tvoc.co.uk

B-52 crash

http://www.aviationlive.org Online Aviation Pics,Videos and Forum The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered, strategic bomber operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since 1955. Beginning with the successful contract bid on 5 June 1946, the B-52 went through several designs, from a straight wing aircraft powered by six turboprop engines, to the final prototype, YB-52 (with 8 engines), which first flew on 15 April 1952 by "Tex" Johnston. Built to carry nuclear weapons for Cold War-era deterrence missions, the B-52 Stratofortress replaced the Convair B-36. Although a veteran of a number of wars, the Stratofortress has dropped only conventional munitions in actual combat. With the longest unrefuelled range of any contemporary bomber, the B-52 carries up to 70,000 pounds of weapons. The USAF has had B-52s in active service since 1955 with Strategic Air Command and were later absorbed into Air Combat Command in 1992. Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept the B-52 in service despite proposals to replace it with the Mach 3 XB-70 Valkyrie, supersonic B-1B Lancer and stealthy B-2 Spirit. In January 2005, the B-52 became the second aircraft, after the English Electric Canberra, to mark 50 years of continuous service with its original primary operator.
