Canadian supporter questions Minister Finley on deportation of U.S. Iraq War Resisters

Canadian supporter questions Conservative Immigration Minister Diane Finley on deportation of U.S. Iraq War Resisters Ottawa, Canada On Friday, August 15, 2008, a Canadian supporter of U.S. war resisters challenged Canadian Immigration Minister Diane Finley to explain why she is deporting U.S. war resisters to court martial and military prison. 64% of Canadians want the war resisters to stay here, 82% of Canadians are against the Iraq war, and on June 3, 2008, the Canadian Parliament passed a motion calling on the government to halt the deportation of war resisters. With the recent decision to deport Jeremy Hinzman, the first war resister to come to Canada, the question remains: does the minority Conservative government support democracy in Canada or does it support the Iraq war? Bob Rae speaks out against deportation of Jeremy Hinzman and U.S. Iraq War Resisters

From Canada NewsWire: Bob Rae joins War Resister Jeremy Hinzman in call to stop deportation TORONTO, Sept. 18 /CNW/ - At a press conference today, Bob Rae, the Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic joined U.S. Iraq War resister Jeremy Hinzman to make an urgent appeal to the Conservative government to stop the imminent deportation of Hinzman and his family, scheduled for September 23. Hinzman was a specialist in the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army. He came to Canada in January 2004 after refusing to deploy to the Iraq war. If he is deported, Hinzman will face court martial, imprisonment and a criminal record. "I believe very strongly, as do a majority in the House of Commons, that we should do as we did during the Vietnam War," said Bob Rae. "We should be accepting of those who refuse to take part in a war that Canada decided not to take part in because it was not internationally sanctioned. Canada accepted over 50,000 people during the Vietnam War, and Canada has benefited greatly from them. Jeremy will make a great Canadian and it would be great if he and his family could stay in Canada," Rae added. "A recent Angus Reid poll showed that two-thirds of Canadians support the war resisters being allowed to stay in Canada," said Lee Zaslofsky, Coordinator of the War Resisters Support Campaign and a Vietnam War resister. "Stephen Harper and Immigration Minister Diane Finley should intervene now to stop the deportation of the Hinzman family and allow other war resisters to stay," concluded Zaslofsky. The Hinzman family - Jeremy, his wife Nga Nguyen, their son Liam (6) and newborn daughter Meghan - are the first war resister family to face deportation. On October 8, Patrick Hart, his wife Jill, and their son Rian (6), will learn whether they will face a similar fate. "I want to thank all the people who have given support to my family and myself while we've been in Canada," said Jeremy Hinzman. "A great majority of Canadians opposed the illegal and immoral war in Iraq as I did. I hope the Prime Minister will intervene to let us stay, along with the other resisters who have sought refuge in this country." *** War Resisters Support Campaign / Campagne d'appui aux résistantEs à la guerre http://www.resisters.ca/ *** Copyright / Droit d'auteur © 2008 War Resisters Support Campaign / Campagne d'appui aux résistantEs à la guerre Intrinsic Audiovisual Productions

Arthur Mkoyan - Valedictorian Facing Deportation

Arthur is asking for your support letters to send to Feinstein and to build a case for his private bill. It won't take long so please send them in. Fire them off to artmkoyan@gmail.com He's graduating at the top of his class, but a Fresno honor student is facing deportation. Arthur Mkoyan is a valedictorian at Bullard High School. He's just a week away from graduation but he may have to head to Armenia instead of college. 17-year-old Arthur Mkoyan is a straight 'A' student, caught in a bureaucratic and legal mess that is threatening to force him out of the country where he grew up. He's preparing to graduate from Bullard High School, where he has achieved a 4.0 grade point average. Fellow students at Bullard High don't think he should be forced to leave this country. Arthur's family has been seeking political asylum here since they fled the old Soviet Union in 1992 but the US government told them there is not enough evidence to grant asylum; no proof that they'd be persecuted if they returned. Students at Bullard think the rules should be changed for a person who works so hard to succeed. Arthur is being allowed to go through graduation ceremonies and receive his diploma, and ten days later he is scheduled to be deported. His principal said the school is proud of what he's done and they're honored to have him as a graduate. Congressman George Radanovich is now getting involved in the case to see if there is a way to help keep Arthur and his family in America.

Immigration Minister Diane Finley questioned about deportation of U.S. Iraq War Resisters in 2008 Canadian Election debate

Immigration Minister Diane Finley questioned about the Harper Conservative government's deportation of U.S. Iraq War Resisters from Canada to prison in American military jails during a 2008 Election debate in her home riding, in Simcoe, Ontario. The Harper government has ignored all opinion polls, a vote in the Parliament and three positive decisions of the Federal Court and is instead working to help the Bush Administration by deporting U.S. soldiers from Canada who refuse to fight or return to the illegal and immoral war in Iraq. Barack Obama's Aunt to Fight Deportation

President-elect Barack Obama's aunt will fight a deportation order and hopes to remain in the United States, her immigration lawyer said Friday. The Associated Press found that she is staying with relatives in Cleveland after fleeing her public housing apartment in Boston. She had been living there five years. She was ordered to leave the country in 2004 by an immigration judge who rejected her request for asylum from Kenya. Her attorney Margaret Wong told the AP on Friday she may file a motion to reopen her case or file an appeal for her to stay on humanitarian grounds. "She will do whatever she can do to fight for the privilege to stay in America," she said.
