1/11 1974 Bolshoi Gala Montreal Baryshnikov Defects Kolpakova

In April of 1974, the Bolshoi Ballet came to Canada with a small group of dancers featuring two stars from the Kirov Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Irina Kolpakova . The Bolshoi group was led by Raisa Struchkova and her husband, Alexander Lapauri . The two main ballerinas on this tour were in their forties with Struchkova showing tremendous energy at almost age 49. I seem to remember this being his last performance prior to his defection, but if it was not his last performance on this tour, it was one of his last performances prior to his defection. His defection was a great event in the west, but when Struchkova and her husband returned to the Soviet Union, they returned in disgrace and it took her a long time to recover and in her husband's case, he soon died in a car accident, so he never did recover from the effects of the defection. The defection severely hindered any Soviet ballet tours after that, particularly in the case of the Kirov which had defectors in Nureyev and Makarova prior to Baryshnikov. The ballets featured in this performance alphabetically are Don Quixote , Fairy Doll , Legend of Love , Ocean and the Pearl pas de trois from the Little Humped Back Horse , Sleeping Beauty and the complete one act Walpurgis Night from Faust .

Chinese Defectors Expose Spies(2/3)

The Surprising defection of Chinese diplomat Chen Yonglin to Australia sent shockwaves from Sydney to Beijing. Concerns have been raised not only from the vast Chinese spy network in the western society, but also in Australia』s reluctance to offend Beijing in handling Chen』s asylum application. From Chen Yongling to Han Guangshen and, even more recently, a defector in Belgium, who exposed a long running, widespread, Chinese, industrial spy network operating in Europe. Within months, these former Chinese Communist Party members and officials escaped one after another. They all chose to publicly reveal their secrets, and announce their resignation from the Chinese Communist Party. It makes people ask this question: 「What』s going on there?」 When we come back we will have experts to analyze the fundamental reason and background of these defections. Analysts say that the Chinese government has so far succeeded in keeping the it』s internal conflict isolated and specific, so that people』s anger for now remains centered on their gripes against local officials and a single cause, and not against the central communist leadership. However, the question remains, 『how long they can keep it that way, and more importantly, if the CCP would be able to bring back people』s trust. When Chen Yonglin and his family were issued a permanent protection visa from the Australian government six weeks after his defection, even China』s ambassador to Australia Ms. Fu Ying, admitted that granting Chen asylum in Australia would open the flood gates. RASHID MINHAS SHAHEED . NISHAN-E-HAIDER

Friday, 05 August 2005 On the morning of the 20st August 1971, a young Pilot Officer, Rashid Minhas, was due to take off in his T-33 as part of a routine training exercise. It was a "complete exercise", meaning his exercise would be unaccompanied. Two of his colleagues had already had taken off, Minhas being the last to be given the go ahead. At 1126 Rashid Minhas had also received clearance for take off and so the 20 year old began taxiing into position. Before he was given final clearance for take off, he was given a signal indicating there was a mechanical error with the plane and that he must not take off. Puzzled, Minhas immediately stopped his plane, waiting for further instruction from the person who had given the signal. It was Safety Officier Muti-ur-Rehman, a senior pilot instructor who was standing by the tarmac at the time. He was several years Rashid's senior, and was someone whom Minhas held with deep respect. Minhas opened his cockpit in order to speak to the approaching Rehman. All of a sudden, Rehman pulled out a chloroform soaked handkerchief and held it over Minhas's mouth, rendering him unconscious. Minhas was not aware that Muti-ur-Rehman was planning on defecting to Mukti Bahini, a terrorist organisation that was involved in targeting West Pakistani civilians living in East Pakistan. Rehman planned on taking over the plane, and flying it to Jodhpur, India where members of India's RAW would be able to covertly assist him in joining the Mukti Bahini. While little is known about what plans Rehman made in the time building up to his defection, it is likely the choice in hijacking Minhas' flight was premeditated. Rashid Minhas was the youngest and most inexperienced of his fellow Pilot Officers. Rashid was also known in the academy for his short size, and would have been no match in a struggle for his older assailant. He gave instructions to a colleague of Bengali origin, telling him where he was planning on taking the plane, and also gave him instructions to escort his family to the Indian High Commission. Rehman's trust was misplaced as his confidant immediately informed his seniors of Rehman's defection attempt. The plane finally took off at 1131, with Rehman at the controls and an unconscious Minhas, and at 1133 contact with the plane from the communication tower was lost. The PAF, alarmed by the turn of events, feared the worse and immediately sent out planes looking for the hijacked T-33A. Radars also in operation trying to scan the location of the plane, but the experienced Rehman knew that flying below 30 feet would make him appear invisible on radar screens. It was in this situation that Rashid Minhas regained consciousness. Little is known of what actually happened in that cockpit that day. Rehman perhaps had believed he could financially tempt Minhas into assisting with his defection, or he may have attempted to physically or emotionally intimidate the much younger Minhas, who was still partially under the influence of chloroform. Finally, Minhas always had the option to eject from the plane, saving his capture by the Indian forces, but at the expense of the plane. Minhas was also aware that the Indian border was approaching, and a decision had to be made soon. The young Minhas, decided that allowing the defection of his plane would be unacceptable, and made a sacrifice of the highest kind. He used his trainee controls to crash his plane, knowing that due to its very low cruising height it would catch Rehman unprepared. The crash site of the T-33A was later found 40km from the Indian border, with both Rashid Minhas Shaheed and Muti-ur-Rehman dead. Rashid Minhas Shaheed was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider in recognition for his bravery, and currently remains the youngest person to receive this award. The PAF base at which he was based was renamed in his honour.

A Clip From "One Man's Hero"

My First Clip. During the Mexican-American War, Irish-Americans defected to the Mexican side because they were mistreated for being Catholic and for knowing all to well about Anglo-colonialism in Eire. This is a clip from a small American movie about the San Patricios (Saint Patricks). It was the largest defection in U.S. history. Irish pride worldwide!

Secrets of the Dead - Umbrella Assassin 1/6

Georgi Ivanov Markov was born on March 1, 1929 in Sofia, Bulgaria, which came under the control of the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1944. Although his father was a "class enemy" of the party, Markov published his first novel at the age of 32 to stellar reviews, and he eventually became an acclaimed novelist and playwright. His life among the privileged elite in Bulgarian society — including among communist party members — ended in 1969, when he defected to Italy after learning that his last play had angered the government and put him at risk. By 1971, Markov had immigrated to England, where he received political asylum. After his defection, he was accused by Bulgarian authorities of being a traitor, and tried and convicted in absentia. Markov became a broadcast journalist and commentator for the BBC, reporting on news and cultural affairs behind the Iron Curtain. In June 1975, he began contributing programs to Radio Free Europe, a station funded and supported by the CIA. His weekly shows were sharply critical of Bulgarian bureaucrats and communist party officials, most notably, party leader Todor Zhivkov. Over the next three years, Markov's programs increasingly inspired dissidents within Bulgaria. Zhivkov and the Bulgarian secret police reportedly enlisted the help of the Soviet KGB to silence Markov — for good. In early 1978, Markov began receiving telephone death threats. In the last call, in August 1978, a man told Markov that he would die of natural causes, killed by a poison the West could not detect or treat. Two weeks later on September 7, Markov was at a parking lot on the south side of the Waterloo Bridge in London, where he always caught a bus across the bridge to go to work at BBC Headquarters. At the bus stop, he felt a sharp stinging sensation in the back of his right thigh. When he turned around, he saw a man bending over to pick up a dropped umbrella. The man, who was facing away from Markov, said "I'm sorry" in a foreign accent, then hailed a cab and left. Markov was in pain, but went to work and told his colleagues what had happened. He noticed a pimple-like swelling on his thigh, and some blood on his jeans. That evening, he developed a high fever; by the next day, he was having trouble speaking. He was admitted to the hospital, where doctors initially began treating him for septicemia, or blood poisoning. Over the next several days, his body began to fail: his blood pressure collapsed, he began vomiting blood, his kidneys began to die. On the morning of September 11, 1978, the conduction system of his heart — the 'pacemaker' that regulates the beating of the heart's atria and ventricles — failed. His heart stopped. Georgi Markov was dead.

Media War - Iraq

Aug 2003 Disturbing new evidence suggests the CIA fed faulty intelligence to handpicked journalists to win support for the war against Iraq. The defection of Iraqi engineer Adnan al Haideri in 2001 was a massive coup for the White House. "He was probably the single most significant defector who came out of Iraq," states an INC spokesman. Al Haideri claimed to have been hired by Saddam Hussein to build facilities for testing WMD. His story was widely circulated and used to justify the war. Unfortunately, it now appears that his remarkable testimony was a lie. Not one of the hundreds of bunkers detailed by him has been found. "Al Haideri's evidence is a perfect example of the kind of garbage that was disseminated by Ahmed Chalabi," states former weapons inspector Scott Ritter. New information has also emerged about the way Al Haideri's story was leaked to the media. "They misled us," states Ritter "Thousands of innocent Iraqis perished in a war that didn't need to be fought."
