This is an illustration of the origin of the verb "fly", past tense and past participle. You can see at 3 different period (OE, ME & Mod.E), the word "fly" was experiencing different changes. This is why linguisticians suggest not to simply make a class of "irregular verbs" against "regular" ones. Similar declensions may have very different origins in history. For example, the past tense "flew" doesn't even come from the same word.
