Charles Munch Conducts "La Mer" and "Daphnis Et Chloé" bits

Debussy's "La mer" excerpt conducted by Charles Munch with the Boston Symphony, 1962 Maurice Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé-- Charles Munch rehearses with the Hungarian State Orchestra, 1966. Plus, excerpts from Boston Symphony concert, 1962 Charles Munch (originally, Münch) was born Sept. 26, 1891, Strassburg, Ger. [now Strasbourg, France], died Nov. 6, 1968, Richmond, Va., U.S. He was in the German army in WW1, got gassed at Peronne and wounded at Verdun, then became a naturalized French citizen after his return to Alsace. During WWII he was music director of the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire de Paris, and refused to collaborate with the Nazis. He helped the Resistance. In 1946 he made his first trip to the US, guest conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He became their principal conductor from 1949 to 1962. He then returned to France and founded the Orchestre de Paris. He was on tour in America with this orchestra when he suffered a heart attack and died in his hotel room. He was a violinist, and I loved the beautiful string playing he got out of his orchestras as much as his celebrated performaces of French repetoire. One of my favorite records is his of the Tchaikovsky "Serenade for Strings". In the rehearsal excerpt you see his easy way with musicians---and the spontaneity, colour, and elegance for which his music-making was famous. "Music is an art that expresses the inexpressible. It rises far above what words can mean or the intelligence defines. Its domain is the imponderable and impalpable land of the unconscious. Man's right to speak this language is for me the most precious gift that has been bestowed upon us.... Is it paradoxical to assert that my duties and disappointments rather than my successes are the basis of my infinite love for my work? This unremitting toil to which I have bound myself for so long, all the manuscripts I have sat bent over until dawn, all the orchestras whose enthusiasm I have had to arouse even during wartime rehearsals in halls invaded by freezing cold morning fogs, all these have taught me a lesson in compassion. My profession gives me opportunity for intense self-expression and freedom for any flight of the imagination. To a reserved, withdrawn, and timid person it offers the chance to realize his dreams in sound. Those who listen may find different things in these sounds-expressions of their own desires, their own emotions, their own thoughts. A conductor, in giving a faithful reproduction and exact translation of the written notes, can re-create the thought and emotion of an unknown person-the composer-, which can sometimes be a transfiguring experience." -- Taken from "I am a Conductor" by Charles Munch, translated by Leonard Burkat.

Daphnis and Chloe Ravel United World Philharmonic

live recording www.UNYouthOrchestra.org this is a "greed free" project The United World Philharmonic is Caring for our Future classical music & technology for sustainable living Beethovenhalle Bonn 31st October 1999 Conductor: Jonathan Sheffer under the patronage of UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME excerpt from an EXCLUSIVE GALA CONCERT classical music synchronized with digitally mastered multimedia images - a reflection on the human civilization - 31st October 1999 in Bonn the official cutural event, live broadcasted on ZDF GERMAN TV at Beethoven Concert Hall . The United World Philharmonic Youth Orchestra of extraordinary young musicians from all over the world and its music are the focal point of the evening. Futuristic communications technology such as "virtual multimedia technology" will be employed to visually present live concerts of classical music.Images showing the state of our world will merge with the orchestra and the music and transport the viewer into a realistic fantasy world. The evening also experiments with the senses - images and sound will be united to create a new experience of classical music. "Youth is the Future" - this key idea is the pillar on which this project has developed and taken on a highly unique viewpoint of the closing century and more particularly of the new millennium. Having arrived at the end of the 20th century it seems that there is no tangible history and no clear view of life upon which young people can orientate themselves. But hidden from sight in the minds of some people there is something which they are able to visualise very clearly and which has led to a new view of life, namely the idea of "sustainable development", of living and economising so that the next generation will not be worse off than we today. This concept of the future has become the hub of the event. On this particular evening, Youth is symbolised by an international orchestra which has been specially brought together for this live event. The artists come from all corners of the earth, are aged between 18 and 25, and every one of them is a professional musician. The orchestra can be seen as a microcosm of "sustainable living" for only when all the musicians play together in a disciplined manner and strive towards a common goal will they be crowned with success. And note that these young people are bringing us all a gift: the gift of their wonderful music, the precious cultural heritage of past generations, the timeless and stimulating beauty of classical music which appeals to all our senses. Orchestra left as a part of its efforts its own 30 kW photovoltaic panels on roof of Beethovenhalle ..can be seen at the end of movie as well as tree planting action... UN Delegates from 186 countries had been invited. ...by the way the musicians never met and played together before.... The Orchestra will be renamed for future activities into "United Nations Youth Orchestra" more information under www.UNYouthOrchestra.org broadcast and co-produced by the environmental programme department of ZDF/arte/3sat

Daphnis et Chloé (Ballet) Nijinsky inspiration´s Ravel

1912 Daphnis et Chloé - Maurice Ravel -París, Le Châtelet (8 junio)Michel Fokine-Léon Bakst-Pierre Monteux / Daphnis et Chloé (Ballet) Nijinsky inspiration´s Ravel /New ballet feature Maurice Ravel turned to ancient Greek legends when asked to write a score for the Russian Ballet's Paris season in 1909. The result was his masterpiece, Daphnis et Chloé, which was premièred in 1912 with the superstar dancer Nijinsky dancing the role of Daphnis. The story is simple enough: Daphnis and his lover Chloé dance and cavort and offer praise to their god, Pan, in the company of other goat-herds and maidens. Their idyll is short-lived, however, when a band of pirates abduct Chloé. But, no fear, all comes good in the end as the great Pan intervenes and reunites the pair. The ballet caused Ravel no end of problems, taking three years to complete amidst arguments and recriminations with his collaborators. Ravel was an exquisite dandy, a man of impeccable taste and poise, equally at home describing the color of his latest cravat in a Parisian salon, as discussing the current fashions in painting, literature or, indeed, music. It is this attention to detail, color, form and presentation that lifts Daphnis et Chloé above most other twentieth-century ballet scores. The stunning opening bars take us back through the mists of time to the island of Lesbos, the brilliance of Ravel's orchestra, the shimmering strings, the sensual flute and the wordless chorus rendering the listener speechless.

DAPHNIS ET CHLOE SUITE NO.2/Ravel/Bernstein/Part-1 (of 2)

Bernstein/New York Philharmonic ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE FRANCE (Schola Cantorum, Hugh Ross, Director) Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire.
