Remembering our Mom

Rita Harding Wright, mom of 9, 4 grandchildren. Born Chicago, IL ( Saint Viator parish, Kedvale at Addison), 11/25/1932; died 11/15/2006, Newton NJ. Born to an Irish Catholic father and a first generation Croatian-American mother (heimat: Vrboska, on Hvar). A beloved Irish matriarch grandmother (Agnes Barry Harding), aunts, uncles. Two brothers she loved. Mom was the middle child, only daughter/sister. Catholic social conscience, the Kennedy family her heroes. Carmelite nun Aunt, another Aunt the Mother Superior of Sisters of Providence (Owens Hall, St Mary of the Woods, IN). we were raised in Park Ridge, IL (Mary Seat of Wisdom, Sisters of Mercy), then to Lakewood, CO.,. Her paternal grandparents helped in the establishment of Saint Viator's church, donating for a stained glass window. My Mom loved the liberal church of Pope John XXIII. In December, 1971, the family moved to Green Township, Newton, NJ. Our Mom raised the kids, later, went to work for the Department of the Army, Picatinny Aresenal, from which she retired. On retiring, she divorced and bought a house for herself. Our Mom raised 9 children, all of whom graduated high school, enjoyed grandchildren, maintained houses, was a wife, had several part time jobs, then working fulltime after her children were raised. She also had the time to volunteer, most significantly in a variety of offices with the NJ Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She advocated and listened to many without judgement. Posthumously, the Sussex County NJ Freeholders thanked her for years helping those with mental illness. Her funeral had a sheriff's escort. An honor as my Mom generally phoned the police to complain about the jail time for people with mental illness in lieu of mental health treatment. Mom also had a bumper sticker "I read banned books" for years. She loved the promise of the Kennedy family. She retired from the Picatinny Arsenal but I first heard great praise of Barack Obama from Mom, a real politics follower. Our Mom was a Park Ridge mom, same time and town of Hillary Clinton, but she loved Obama and admired Tipper Gore! Mom loved books, Christmas, Alfred Hitchcock films, gardening peonies and children. Her first grandchild played professional minor league baseball, signed from high school! Countless photos of children, their partners, grandchildren abounded. Mom is buried on a hill overlooking the town of her last 35 years. Her death so sudden. Remembrances from so many... farmer friends, other Moms from her years as a young Mother, most of all the stories of the people she oft listened to, the people we usually run away from. Of course, we children had a Mom we could phone at any hour and she would answer and listen to us. Thanks Mom. A beautiful person to know and love. Always in our hearts. Thanks also for watching. Amazed to see from around the world: NJ, Illinois, Indiana, CA, Pennsylvania, NV, NY, CT to Alaska, then Ghana, Nigeria, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Ireland, Australia, Malta, Saudi Arabia and South Korea! thanks much!

Guy Mitchell - Heartaches By The Number

Guy Mitchell (February 22, 1927-July 1, 1999) was a Croatian-American pop singer, was successful in his homeland as well in the United Kingdom and Australia. As an international recording star of the 1950s he achieved record sales in excess of 44 million units and this included six million-selling singles. He was born Albert George Cernik, son of immigrants from Croatia, in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 11, he was signed by Warner Brothers Pictures, to be groomed as a child star, and he also performed on the radio on Station KFWB in Los Angeles, California. After leaving school, he worked as a saddlemaker, but supplemented his income by singing whenever he could. At this point in his life, Dude Martin, who had a country music broadcast in San Francisco, noticed him and hired him to perform with his band. He served in the United States Navy for two years, and after leaving the service became a singer with Carmen Cavallaro's big band. In 1947 he made some recordings for Decca with Cavallaro's band, but had to leave due to a case of food poisoning. He eventually went to New York City, and made several records for King Records under the name Al Grant. He won on the radio show Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts during this time. Mitch Miller, who was in charge of talent at Columbia Records, noted Cernik in 1950, and he joined Columbia and got his new stage name at Miller's urging: Miller is supposed to have said, "my name is 'Mitchell' and you seem a nice 'guy', so we'll call you Guy Mitchell." In the 1950s and 1960s he acted in movies as well as singing. He did movies with Teresa Brewer, Pat Crowley, and Rosemary Clooney. In 1957 he had his own television show. His first hit was 1951's "My Heart Cries for You". Though he is considered an average pop singer, many of his songs have a decided rock beat to them, including "Knee Deep in the Blues", "Heartaches By the Number", "Rock-a-Billy", "The Same Old Me" and his biggest hit, "Singing the Blues", which was number one for 10 weeks in 1956.
