CAPE TOWN, 29 SEPTEMBER 2006 - About 50 demonstrators marched to Cape Town's civic centre on today, to demand that a new by-law that limits access to the streets be changed or dropped. They object to sections of the proposed "Streets, Public Places and the Prevention of Public Nuisance" by-law that would ban a range of activities from public places including car washing, vending without a licence, spitting, skating or simply touching someone's property without their consent. Simphiwe Dada from the Alternative Information and Development Centre says that the bylaw is part of a nation- and in fact world-wide pattern of driving the poor and homeless out of public spaces.
