It's interesting to me that not more people in Regina Canada commute to work by bicycle more often. I mean the city is only 118 square kilometres in area, so even cycling from crazy east-end suburbia to the heart of downtown only takes 20-25 minutes. Heck, I even beat traffic on the evening commute. Meanwhile you'd save on gas parking and wear and tear on a vehicle.

STORY: For most people kayaking is a leisure pursuit. For Ricardo Assis-Rosa it's his transport to work. Ricardo lives in Bath, western England with the river Avon running across the bottom of his garden. Most days he paddles 3 miles upstream to his office where he works as a trainee architect. Ricardo says the journey brings him closer to nature and reduces his carbon footprint, or in this case paddle print. [Ricardo Assis-Rosa, Assistant Architect]: "It's an opportunity to experience nature and if you want to be environmentally concerned and that you want to be in touch you should also let nature show you what's happening.  If you can feel that and be part of that rhythm and see the cycles of seasons changing and the weather changing you, are also aware that these are things you can be part of." He says he's hoping to bring the same ethos to his work. [Ricardo Assis-Rosa, Assistant Architect]: "We have more and more green agenda's which we want to put into our designs and our architecture is trying to really encourage people to use ground materials, some very good insulations, natural materials.  All these things are quite important for the performance of buildings."   Ricardo's colleagues are all in favour of his preferred mode of transport - at least in principle. [Terry Pinto, Senior Project Architect]: "Wonderful and bonkers.  Good for the heart, good for the soul. Bit too cold and wet for me but I like it." [Matthew Batterham, Surveyor]: "Well to start with it was a bit of a giggle for us all really to see someone coming in by kayack and a wetsuit.  But realistically if you live on the river we work alongside the river then its a perfectly sensible way to get to work, you avoid quite a lot of the rush hour and its a very very pleasant journey, not that I've done it myself." Meanwhile Ricardo is finding that his fellow commuters of the feathered variety, are slowly beginning to accept him.

Toronto Moto Scooter Club, TMSC Organizer Quentin takes a commuter trip with Mary Ito on his Vespa for the CBC series Living In Toronto.

Morning rush hour on the former New York Central Water Level Route main line, Milepost 30.9. Shot Monday 10/13/2008 at Ossining, NY between 07:59 and 08:12 AM. The first train was #836, 5 minutes late. I cut out the clip of #838 running right on #836's yellows for reasons I wont discuss here. Note Amtrak #63's 'double' consist. This is a normal occurrence on Mondays - an additional Genny and 5 cars between its engine and regular consist. Note Amtrak #232 has two private cars on the rear.
