Light Pollution at the University of Oklahoma

BULLETIN: Medical Researchers Say Light Pollution Increases Breast Cancer Risk A recent medical journal article says that women who live in neighborhoods with excessive nighttime illumination are at increased risk for breast cancer. Researcher studying satellite images of night lights in 147 communities in Israel determined that areas with the greatest amount of light at night had approximately 73 percent higher incidence of breast cancer compared to areas with the lowest level of nighttime illumination. This is because the body produces the cancer-fighting hormone melatonin during sleep in the darkness. Source: Chronobiology International, February 2008;25(1): 65-81 ________________________________________ OU president David Boren is very childish. He bulldozed a historic neighborhood for his 2002 stadium expansion. He treats the stadium like his new sandbox. He wants everyone to see it. Many times I have seen the four huge panels of light turned on when there is nothing happening in the stadium. I have been told that the glow on the horizon from the stadium can be seen eight miles away. Boren, a tyrannical buffonish fathead, is in a constant state of self-celebration. I quickly learned not to look at the lights when walking by the stadium at night. I saw spots the first time. This meant that some of my vision receptor cells were temporarily impaired. Continued exposure to this kind of damage from intense light will cause permanent blind spots. There is an environmental group which has formed in order to protest light pollution like Boren has brought to OU. One of the problems is that it obstructs us from seeing the stars: http://www.darksky.org/mc/page.do
