Israel has confirmed it has agreed to a six-month truce with Palestinian armed groups including Hamas, the country's public radio service has reported. Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister and Ehud Barak, defence minister, approved the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire a day after Egyptian and Palestinian officials announced a deal. The Palestinian territory's been the scene of deadly clashes with the Israeli army since a Hamas takeover last year. Egypt, which has worked for months to broker the deal, is urging both sides to do everything they can to make the peace last. Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Gaza on the Egyptian-brokered peace deal.

The latest violence in Iraq has put extreme pressure on a ceasefire by the Mahdi Army - a ceasefire that has been credited with reducing the violence, not just in Basra, but across the country. The Mahdi Army announced that the ceasefire is still in place. But for how long? Owen Fay reports.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said Friday he has signed a cease-fire agreement with Russia, which protects the former Soviet republic's interests despite concessions to Moscow. (Aug. 15)

Tbilisi has reportedly declared a unilateral ceasefire in the conflict with its breakaway republic of South Ossetia. Georgia's minister for reintegration said Tbilisi wanted to avoid mass casualties. It follows days of shelling and skirmishes between the sides.

As the ceasefire agreement gets mixed reaction around the world, representatives from five Eastern European nations have arrived to Tbilisi in a show of support for the Georgian leader. Meanwhile, the Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini, believes that 'there shouldn't be an anti-Russian group and a pro-Russian group' in Europe.

On the night of November 4th 2008 the security situation between Israel and the Gaza Strip took a sharp turn for the worst.
