Catalina Island
Catalina Island is known as the island of romance, but it's also a great spot for families. The second largest of the Channel Islands, just 22 miles from California's coast, Catalina makes a great family weekend. Our kids had a blast on the hourlong ferry from Dana Point to the island, where we spotted sailboats, kayakers, and a pod of frolicking dolphins. Once you disembark in Avalon Bay, grab a golf cart for a tour around the island, and then take a stroll along Crescent Drive, Catalina's main boardwalk. Here, kids can enjoy a treat of spun taffy, ice cream or caramel apples at the old-fashioned confectionary Lloyds of Avalon — — or enjoy a few video games and skee ball at the Metropole Marketplace arcade. A trip to the island isn't complete without a stroll along the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can grab some fish and chips at Eric's restaurant and then go for a cruise on the bay. The Undersea Tour aboard the Starlight and Emerald semi-submersible vessels is a must-see. During the voyage, you'll explore the clear waters of Lover's Cove and a protected kelp forest where you'll come face to face with bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, and opaleyes — among many other types of marine life. The 45-minute tour is also offered at night. To explore Catalina's rugged interior and native wildlife, hop aboard the Classic Inland Motor Tour, which follows the 1800s stagecoach route. In Middle Ranch, you'll meet Tachi, an endangered Santa Catalina Island Fox who acts as an educational ambassador for her species. You'll also see a herd of wandering bison, native woodpeckers, and perhaps a bald eagle or two. At El Rancho Escondido, the Wrigley family's Hidden Ranch, you can enjoy an Arabian horse demonstration and then spend about 45 minutes walking through the ranch. Pet the horses in their stables, play with a wandering kitty, or watch a short film on the ranch's history. A small museum displays Bohlin saddles, carriages and family memorabilia. After your tour, the Golf Gardens are just steps away. Known as one of the world's most challenging and beautiful miniature golf courses, the lushly landscaped grounds offer 18 holes of family fun. |

The Four Preps - 26 Miles (Santa Catalina)
The clean-cut West Coast-based Four Preps are best remembered for a string of Top 100 hits during the late '50s and early '60s, including "Twenty Six Miles (Santa Catalina)," "Big Man," "Down by the Station," "Lazy Summer Night," "Got a Girl," "It Ain't Never," "Moon River," "Lollipops and Roses," "My Special Angel," and others. Ultimately, the Four Preps' biggest influence can be heard via their impact on Brian Wilson, whose harmony-driven production for the Beach Boys was a direct antecedent of the Four Preps' sound. The original group -- Bruce Belland, Ed Cobb, Marv Ingraham, and Glen Larson -- were discovered by Capitol Records A&R exec Nik Venet while performing at a Hollywood High School talent show in 1956 and were signed shortly afterwards to a long-term contract. By the end of the year, the wholesome milk-fed group charted their first single, "Dreamy Eyes." Before long, there were changes to the lineup, with former Diamonds' original lead vocalist David Somerville joining the group as a replacement for the departing Larson. For eight years, between 1956-1964, the Four Preps charted on the Top 100 13 times, but by the mid-'60s, they were beginning to sound a bit outdated. Their last chart hit "A Letter to the Beatles" was a desperate attempt to stay hip, but the days of button-up sweaters, crew cuts, and four-part vocal harmonies were waning, and they knew it. The Four Preps continued to record until 1967. Bruce Belland has had an amazing career since the group disbanded. His songs have been recorded by a wide variety artists, including Willie Nelson, Johnny Mathis, Roy Clark, Sammy Davis, Lena Horne, Donny Osmond, T.G. Shepherd, Herman's Hermits, the Mouseketeers, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He has since branched out to television, becoming one of the most sought-after writers in Hollywood and even co-starred for four years on TV's Ozzie and Harriet. He is now a senior network TV programming executive and has provided countless voices for animated features, including the Disney classic Jungle Book, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of the Arts and was cited in the Congressional Record for his co-authoring of the Official Anthem of the Bi-Centennial of the U.S. Constitution. Ed Cobb, likewise, has had an impressive career. He has received 32 Gold and Platinum records for producing and/or sound engineering such artists as the Lettermen, the Standells, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, and Pink Floyd, been nominated for three Grammies, and received two Record of the Year Awards for Sound. He has produced, co-produced, or written records with sales in excess of 40 million, including such landmark hits as "Dirty Water," "Every Little Bit Hurts," "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," and "Tainted Love." He's also a champion horse breeder and was recently elected President of the Idaho Racing Commission. In addition to his musical achievements, Somerville has acted in countless dramatic roles on such shows as Star Trek, The Fall Guy, Quincy, McCloud, and General Hospital and is also one of the most in demand voice-over artists in Hollywood. Today, there's a new group of Preps on the oldies scene -- appropriately enough, they're called the New Four Preps -- whose performing lineup includes Belland, Cobb, Somerville (a.k.a. "the three tenors of Pop"), and Jim Yester of the Association; together they represent accumulated record sales in excess of 100 million, including 29 hit singles, 15 gold albums, and 13 Grammies. ~ Bryan Thomas, All Music Guide |

Consolidated PBY Catalina
From its introduction to U.S. Naval service in 1936, through its continued international military use into the 1970's, to the recent retirement of the last civilian fire-bomber, the Consolidated PBY Catalina has served a distinguished career as one of the most rugged and versatile aircraft in U.S. history. It was created in response to the U.S. Navy's 1933 request for a prototype to replace the Consolidated P2Y and the Martin P3M with a new patrol-bomber flying boat with extended range and greater load capacity. The Catalina was created under the guidance of the brilliant aero-engineer Isaac Macklin Laddon. The new design introduced internal wing bracing, which greatly reduced the need for drag-producing struts and bracing wires. A significant improvement over its predecessors, it had a range of 2,545 miles, and a maximum take-off weight of 35,420 lbs. In 1939 the Navy considered discontinuing its use in favor of proposed replacements. The Catalina remained in production, however, because of massive orders placed by Britain, Canada, Australia, France, and the Netherlands. These countries desperately needed reliable patrol planes in their eleventh-hour preparations for WW II. Far from replacing the PBY, the Navy placed its largest single order since WW I for an aircraft. Over the years, numerous improvements were made to the design. An amphibious version, the PBY-5A, was developed in 1939, through the addition of a retractable tricycle undercarriage. The PBY-6A featured hydrodynamic improvements designed by the Naval Aircraft Factory. The Soviet Union produced a license-built version for their Navy called the GST and powered by Mikulin M-62 radial engines. Boeing Aircraft of Canada built the PB2B-1 and PB2B-2 ("Canso"), and a derivative of the PBY-5A was built by Canadian Vickers. In US Army Air Force service, the aircraft was known as the OA-10A (PBY-5A) and OA-10B (PBY-6A). The Royal Air Force's Coastal Command flew Catalinas under the designations Catalina Mk I/II/III/IV. A total of approximately 4000 Catalinas were built between 1936 and 1945. Because of their worldwide popularity, there was scarcely a maritime battle in WW II in which they were not involved. The PBY had its vulnerabilities: it was slow, with a maximum speed of 179 mph, and with no crew armor or self-sealing tanks, it was highly vulnerable to anti-aircraft attack. However it was these weaknesses, coincident with the development of effective radar, and Japanese reliance on night transport, which led to the development of the "Black Cat Squadrons." These crews performed nighttime search and attack missions in their black-painted PBYs. The tactics were spectacularly successful and seriously disrupted the flow of supplies and personnel to Japanese island bases. The Catalinas also proved effective in search and rescue missions, code-named "Dumbo." Small detachments (normally of three PBYs) routinely orbited on stand-by near targeted combat areas. One detachment based in the Solomon islands rescued 161 airmen between January 1 and August 15, 1943, and successes increased steadily as equipment and tactics improved. |
