Whether its reduced rainfall in Australia and Uganda, increasingly severe cyclones in Bangladesh, or sea level rise and storm surges in the Pacific, we are all starting to feel the impact of climate change. The people of the Carteret Islands are about to make history, as they begin to leave their island to find a new home. Rising seas are making their atoll uninhabitable making land too salty to grow food and by gradually wasing the beaches on the small, sandy isalnds. When a suaitable home can be found they will start to leave. They are getting by now with the help of shipments of free rice from the Autonamous government of Bougainville.

Located 50 miles off the coast of Papua New Guinea, the Carteret Islands are disappearing into the ocean. Climate change is destroying the atoll, forcing the islanders to search for homes on Bougainville, an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea. Though this is the story of one remote community, scientists estimate climate change will displace up to 50 million people by 2050.

Rising seas, expanding deserts and changing weather have already displaced many, possibly millions of people. But the people of the Carterets are unique, as they will be the first to see their atoll, 6 small islands 100 km form Bougainville, completely submerged. They will begin to desert their islands in early 2007.
