Police said a 25-year-old Raytown man was killed during a carjacking and shooting late Tuesday afternoon at Case Park near Eighth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Witnesses told investigators that at about 5:15 p.m., they heard several gunshots and saw a red SUV speeding away. Investigators identified the victim as Brandon C. Fauntleroy-McDowel. Friends and relatives said Fauntleroy-McDowel had a wonderful future ahead of him. "We've lost someone that had great things ahead of him, great things," aunt Debra Jenkins told KMBC's Peggy Breit. "The community has lost a great young man and the family, we can't even describe the loss." Fauntleroy-McDowel worked full time at the State Street Financial Services, which is a block away from Case Park. He was also working to complete his master's degree and had plans for entering law school in the fall. "Yesterday we were making plans for the weekend," friend Christopher Rembert said. Rembert was president of the community service fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha. Fauntleroy-McDowel was vice president. "He was definitely a servant leader. He was supposed to be one of the greatest leaders this city has probably ever seen, and he believed in giving back to a community that had done well to him," Rembert said. Loved ones said Fauntleroy-McDowel's accomplishments were only exceeded by his fun-loving personality. "A great young man that was destined for great things, and you've got a family here that's hurting for no reason," Jenkins said. Fauntleroy-McDowel's SUV is still missing. Police said they are looking for a 2002 maroon or red four-door Chevrolet Tahoe with tinted windows and 20-inch chrome wheels. The Missouri license plate number is 1CB-83L. Murder charges were filed Monday in connection with a fatal carjacking last week at Case Park in downtown Kansas City. Investigators said a man and a woman turned themselves in to authorities. One went to police on Sunday, the other on Monday. Brandon Fauntleroy-McDowel, 25, was shot and killed on March 25 at Eighth and Jefferson streets. His red Chevrolet Tahoe was stolen. It was later found burned in Kansas City, Kan. Marlan D. Epps, 18, and JaNae L. Haygood, 21, both of Kansas City, Kan., were each charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action. The pair could face up to four life sentences if found guilty. Investigators said there doesn't seem to be a connection between the suspects and the victim; Fauntleroy-McDowel was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. According to court papers, Haygood drove Epps to Case Park because they wanted to rob someone. Fauntleroy-McDowel had just finished his last day working at State Street Financial Services, which is a block away from Case Park. He was also working to complete his master's degree and had plans for entering law school in the fall. Fauntleroy-McDowel also volunteered at the Wyandotte Center, a place for children with emotional and behavioral disorders. Relatives told KMBC's Martin Augustine that Fauntleroy-McDowel found it rewarding to work with children. Police said a tipster helped solve the case. "We got a lot of information from the TIPS Hot Line -- that was very useful," Jackson County Prosecutor Jim Kanatzar said. Debra Jenkins, the victim's aunt, said her nephew was very devoted to helping others, and that may have caused the flood of tips to the hot line. "This victim and his family, obviously, had a lot of friends in this community that were very anxious to help," Jenkins said. Twyla Fauntleroy, the victim's mother, said the news of the arrests brings some measure of relief. "We're elated. We're elated because God is the deliverer. The family, we're elated about it. And we know that justice will be done," Twyla Fauntleroy said. "We'd like to thank the city of Kansas City for taking care of this so speedily."

DETROIT -- Detroit police are searching for at least four armed men in connection with a string of violent carjackings across Detroit. Detroit police spokesman James Tate said the men may be responsible for at least five carjackings. The latest carjacking occurred Wednesday night on Detroit's northwest side when the men, armed with shotguns, stole a man's car and locked him in the trunk, police said. Tate said that while the victim was in the trunk, he heard the men carjack another person. The men eventually let the victim go, police said. The serial carjackers are targeting victims entering and exiting their driveways late at night, police said. Torjuan of Detroit was carjacked as he pulled into his driveway around 2:30 a.m. Torjuan told Local 4 the carjackers, holding AK-47's, stormed his vehicle, opened his doors and demanded all of his money. He said after he gave them the money, they took his wallet as well. "I was just scared for my life," said Torjuan. The carjackers told him to leave the keys in his car and took off, he said.
