APTN unvoiced news video. On February 22, 2004, members of Haiti's disbanded army and ex-police officers stormed Cap-Haitien, killing supporters of the government and chasing away the police. They freed all the prisoners in the jail, burned the police headquarters and held a victory parade through the city, attacking the radio station of a vehement government supporter, Deputy Naom Marcellus.

Courtesy of Henning Wackernagel of Columbus Air, I went on this one-day flight excursion from Puerto Plata to Cap Haitien on the north coast of Haiti. I apologise for any historical inaccuracies there might be in my commentary however I was just repeating parrot-fashion the information told to us by our local guide and pilot.

Looking through their Eyes is a photo project where children are asked to use photography to show what they like and don't like about living in their community. These photos were taken by children in Shada, Cap-Haitien, Haiti. Shada is one of the poorest slums in the world. Their lives, however, could not be richer. The beautiful music was composed and performed by by the 2007 Digicel Stars winner Rosemond Jolissaint, a 17 year old Haitian musician who is collaborating with SOIL to bring to light children's issues in Haiti. Konbit Sante is a Maine-based group of medical and non-medical professionals working to improve the public health system in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. Rather than developing a parallel health system, Konbit Sante's mission is to help build local capacity for Haitians to care for Haitians.

This is a song written and performed by some of the youth of Shada, Cap-Haitien. They opened their performance with a lyrical prayer, and went straight to business. "Pitye"--pity in English--is part social critique of life in Haiti and part musical celebration for the friends they have. One of the most powerful, beautiful, and thoughtful lyrics is sung by the girl: "Ann Ayiti nou genyen de fle, se fle la mize ak fle pousye." In Haiti we have two flowers, the flower of misery and the flower of dust.
