Caesarea Palaestina, also called Caesarea Maritima, a town built by Herod the Great about 25 --13 BC, lies on the sea-coast of Israel about halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa, on the site of a place previously called Pyrgos Stratonos ("Strato" or "Straton's Tower," in Latin Turris Stratonis). Caesarea Palaestina should not be confused with other cities named to flatter the Caesar, Caesarea Philippi, also in Israel, or Caesarea Mazaca in Anatolian Cappadocia. Herod the palace-builder did not neglect his new city: his palace at Caesarea was built on a promontory that jutted out into the sea, with a decorative pool surrounded by stoas. The civil life of the new city began in 13 BC, when Caesarea was made the civil and military capital of Judaea, and the official residence of the Roman procurators and governors, Pontius Pilatus, praefectus and Felix. The city was described in detail by the Jewish historian Josephus (Jewish Antiquities XV.331ff; Jewish War I.408ff). Remains of all the principal buildings erected by Herod existed down to the end of the 19th century. Remains of the medieval town are also visible, consisting of the walls (one-tenth the area of the Roman city), the castle, the site of the modest Crusader cathedral and church.

The ruins of ancient Caesarea are located on the Mediterranean coast, half way between Tel Aviv and Haifa, Israel. Herod the Great built Caesarea Maritima to honor his patron, Caesar Augustus about 25--13 BC. I visited in July, 2007 while recording footage for an upcoming documentary on the life of Apostle Peter. The book of Acts records that in Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of the Italian Cohort. Peter met Cornelius and converted him to Christianity. Caesarea harbor is one of the most significant engineering feats of the ancient world, Herod's engineers filled barges with sand, floated them into position and then sank them in a circle, thus forming the harbor. Once Roman ships had a safe place to dock, Caesarea became a major seaport. Eventually, time and the sea washed the sand footings away. www.frakesproductions.com

Presented at UMBC's 12th annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day: This project was a coming together of a large research effort and a film production workflow. "Procopius of Caesarea: The Buildings" took hundreds of hours over the course of half a semester to complete and along the way afforded me the opportunity to work with experts in both Byzantine history and film production. The film is about Procopius, the Byzantine historian at the time of Justinian the Great, and his viewing of the completed structure of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. I collaborated with UMBC professor of Byzantine history, Dr. John Birkenmeier. With his help and lots of research, I was able to use the actual plans of the modern day Hagia Sophia and primary source texts written by Procopius and others to create a three-dimensional model of the building as it would have looked in 560 CE when Procopius saw it. I also worked with UMBC professors Cathy Cook and Fred Worden to master the necessary production techniques to produce the film in Super 16mm color film and composite the film into the animated environments. The final step was transferring the completed work to digital video in order to capitalize on that medium's distribution possibilities.
