The ancient Siamese capital of Ayuthaya is pleasant town to spend a few days enjoying the ruins and canals and learning a bit of history. When Bangkok was a swampy backwater, Ayutthaya was a powerful military and economic city which dominated central Thailand for 400 years. The best way to visit the complex is by bike. Ayutthaya was doing pretty well until Burma finally quashed the city in 1767. The Thai bounced back quickly, however, with another city, Bangkok, patterned after Ayutthaya.

Ayutthaya was the ancient capital of Thailand and existed from 1350 to 1767. Millions of visitors travel to the temple ruins to witness a reminder of the kingdom that once existed and flourished in this area. This slideshow is an attempt to capture and portray the grounds as they exist today and provide a small glimpse in to the ruined temples of Ayutthaya.
