Harold McIver Harold McIver was born on April 1, 1931at his family's home between Sylvester and Moultrie, Georgia. His father was very active in the Steelworkers Union. He worked in the steel industry and became a member of the United Steelworkers Union. In 1959 he was elected President of the Steelworkers' Local. Later McIver became organizing director for the Industrial Union Department (IUD) of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Unions (AFL-CIO). He was active in working for better labor relations and was present in the action depicted in the movie Norma Rae. Mr. McIver passed away July 15, 1996

On July 14, 1946 a group of steelworkers poured out of Hamilton's Playhouse Theater and set up pickets around the country's largest steel mill. Their action sparked one of the most important strikes in Canada's history - a strike which many believe to mark the birth of the modern Canadian labour movement.

Textile Industry Working Conditions 1953 USA
A clip of a description of working conditions in the US textile industry from 1953. No mentions of Brown Lung disease or Byssinosis, a chronic lung disease caused by exposures to airborne dusts from hemp, flax, and cotton processing. OSHA finally issued a regulation to control textile worker exposure in 1978. This was clipped from the 1953 industrial film The Greater Goal: Human Dividends from American Industry.
