Great Egret

Title:
Great Egret

Description:
This Great Egret is trying to keep her three chicks in the nest. You can see her breeding plumage (aigrettes) blowing in the breeze. If you look just above the egret's head you can see a nest with cormorant chicks bobbing around in it (cormorants make the oinking noise you can hear). Great Egrets live all over North America in the spring and summer, but migrate to the Gulf Coast for the winter. The Rookery is the only place I know where you can walk a few yards from a parking lot to the nesting grounds of large wading birds. The birds are safe from predators because the trees they nest in grow in a pond populated by alligators. There's a dike that people can walk on that is about level with the nests, 20-30 yards away. The Rookery is at the Houston Audubon Society sanctuary at High Island, Texas, about halfway between Houston and Beaumont and a mile from the Gulf.

Deer encounter...
I was sitting in the woods and was hearing two creatures. One was on my right and seemed to be stalking me. The one on the left seemed to be being stalked also. So I copied the noise it made as it ran at me. It stopped and wasn't concerned about me, but was worried about the sound to my right. Then it ...
