The McIlroys - 'Dark Island'
The McIlroys are a Scottish, 3 piece, family musical group here in America who perform traditional, ethnically Scottish music. John McIlroy is the musical mainstay of the group by playing various instruments, singing, etc. The redhaired Patti McIlroy, one of my most favorite female singers of all time (who typically makes me cry like a baby with her singing) is their primary lead singer. The lovely Katie McIlroy performs the flute-work for them as well as backup singing. John & Patti were both born and raised in Scotland, their daughter Katie was born and raised here in the U.S. I've had the distinct pleasure of seeing them perform live twice. This studio recording is of them doing the popular 'Dark Island'. I haven't seen these folks in a long time, nor have I heard any reports of them recently--I pray God is richly blessing them these days. =)

Calum Kennedy sings 'The Dark Island.' The lochs of Benbecula are in the foreground. The Hills of South Uist in the distance. The photo was taken on my last trip to Uist.
Dark Island
This tune is being played by an old friend of mine, David Glowasky. I added the banjo a couple of hours later after I'd figured things out.

Another entry for the Stargate Atlantis vid contest, featuring clips from the episode "Sunday". Forgive the poor audio -- it's me singing, and I don't have the greatest recording/editing equipment! ^_~ (The bagpipes are from the episode.)

Scottish Tradition : Dark Island iii - An t-Eilean Dorcha
Positively the last version of the Dark Island that I will post. It is from an album recorded c. 1965 Mary Sandeman had never spoken a word of Gaelic until she was in her twenties but went on to become very fluent and spent time in Uist to improve her Gaelic. A wonderfully versatile singer too!
Scottish Tradition : Dark Island : American Cafe Orchestra
Some film of Benbecula and South Uist, the quality should be better. Some of it is also too fast for the music. The band plays the best version of the Dark Island that I have ever heard. Those who love solo accordion versions will not agree. Ach well.. Bithidh cuid air an doigh, 's bithcuid nach bith.
