Roseate Spoonbill
Description:
This Roseate Spoonbill is preening his feathers while mom hatches the chicks. It just doesn't seem possible that he could do much with that spatula-shaped beak, but of course it works very well. Roseate Spoonbills live along the Gulf Coast and in south Florida. The Rookery is the only place I know where you can walk a few yards from a parking lot to the nesting grounds of large wading birds. The birds are safe from predators because the trees they nest in grow in a pond populated by alligators. There's a dike that people can walk on that is about level with the nests, 20-30 yards away. The Rookery is at the Houston Audubon Society sanctuary at High Island, Texas, about halfway between Houston and Beaumont and a mile from the Gulf.
