The faces of ancient Egypt
Title:
The faces of ancient Egypt
Description:
Mainly old Kingdom statues, and assorted mummy cases from the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms. Mainly I've stuck to painted statues meant to be lifelike portraits of the deceased. The first minute is mainly 4th and 5th dynasty tomb statues that are meant ot be realistic portraits of the deceased; later on are some statuettes of servants, followed by mummy masks and cases. As far as I know, none of these are from the Greek or Roman period. The statue of Rahotep and Nofret is not 'proved to be a fake', neither is the bust of Nefertiti. The only person to claim Rahotep/Nofret was faked was Ivan Van Sertima, on the grounds it had a moustache and was too European looking- but since this is actually common to old Kingdom statues (see others on the vid) this is groundless. When the statue was found, only a very basic grasp of heiroglyphs was available to only a handful of scholars, and there was no way the heiroglyhs on the back could have been written at that time, so it's impossible for it to be a 19th century fake. The Egyptians also reckon they can prove Nefertii was removed illegally from Egypt, which would make the odds of her being an art nouveau fake very unlikely, particularly since the bust has a good resemblence to the other heads of Neferititi which all have a solid provenence.
